Hey, Rhythm on, welcome aboard...sorry if I answer your question with a question, but "what kind of drum I should get?" is like asking "what kind of girl should I date?"

What kind of music do you like best? Metal? Rock? Latin?

If you were getting only one drum to play for fun, I would start (and did) with bongos, a conga drum or a djembe. If you're starting to study percussion seriously, I'd start with a snare drum on which to practice the rudiments (and truth is, you can learn the rudiments on a hand drum).

Think of the music you like best and enjoy playin', and start from there!

keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

i would recommend this kit its a beginner kit but its a solid kit, good for all ranges of music it comes with all the stands you want and need plus you will have a little money left over for buying cymbals. You also might want to try a local music store or guitar center for one of these because they are being priced way down to make way for the new series or pearls.

this kit is also an option it gives you more room to spend on higher quality cymbals, but in my opininon the pearl is the best way to go. Well known, good quality, great reviews, fabulous hardware and above all else you get a free 10"tom.

    Happy buying!!

My advice is to buy a higher quality used set. If you have no experience find a drummer who you trust to help you find one. Drums don't really wear out that much but hardware & heads do. Buy the best quality bass drum pedal & high hat stand you can afford. Used DW can be bought on line, pawn shops, & some music or drum shops.
I also buy most of my Zildjian cymbals used. Cymbals will usually crack in the first year or so after you get them. Also good cymbals will change in sound some the first couple of years. I figure if I find a A custom in a pawn shop for less than half price I will buy it if I like the sound.Because, it probably won't crack on me or change sound. If this is your first set don't worry about a bunch of drums & cymbals or a double bass pedal. Learn the basics first & then expand. I hope this helps.
I have been playing since I was ten about 41 years ago & have made lot's of mistakes & learned the hard way. We didn't have drum forums or even Modern Drummer Magazine to help. Good luck!

800 bucks to spend? I would suggest a nice used Pearl Export kit. Shop around, and like Dave said, check your local want-ads and pawn shops, and a lot of music stores sell used kits on consignment. Good luck! (oh, and P.S. - you're not getting ANYTHING DW for 800 bucks, not even used)
Word to the wise : don't mess with the drummer.
