Default preparing my kit for a rack..

not sure if this is how it works but next month since i plan to get a rack, i thought i would get my kit ready for it by removing the bass drum tom mounts. i didnt realize till after, but it left two small holes on the shell poking through to the inside. is this a big deal or should i cover it somehow? does it affect the sound any?

Im thinking about switching to a rack as well and I was wondering if it would be ok to leave the mount with hole intact. Mine just has one hole.

Your bass drums are already ported, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

It shouldn't effect the sound that much, Pearl makes a plate that covers that section for those of us who have converted our kicks to a born-again-virgin...but I haven't seen any other company offer anything like it.

Some guys have just found a way to have a small plate fabricated to fit and cover up the holes. IMHO it looks a lot better, but not a show stopper.

I guess it all just depends on what you can live with...but if you wrap, would you need to re-wrap the entire kit? That might be more trouble than it's worth.

I have to admit I don't know much about Mapex. Is that finish a laquer or a wrap?

I think it would be pretty much impossible to find a wrap to match the finish then. Even if you could get close you would still notice the difference. I may be wrong.

I wouldn't think they would replace it, but you could always buy a new one.

Contact your local Mapex dealer and ask if it's possible to order the exact size and what not straight from Mapex.

no it doesnt effect the sound much. your talking about having a 1 inch vent if you dont cover them...thats no biggie on a 22 inch drum.

Pearl makes them and im sure you can get a generic at lowes or home depot,
they are little black plastic plugs. MAKE SURE TO GET PLASTIC!!! the rubber ones cant hold the pressure and blast out.

also racks come standard, try to personalize it in some way...make a neat shape, make your drumkit look like a motorcycle, something...It just looks really bad to have this amazing drum kit covered entirely by chrome and and a bar going infront of the audience view. Im generally opposed to rack systems unless your a metal band (15 cymbals and 10 toms) and have 15 minute set changes.
