I prefer having the ride down low over the floor tom to keep my elbow in and my wrist relaxed. I have a 3 up 2 down set up too but with 8, 10, 12, 14, 16.

    dw.jpg

The 14 is a standard rack tom (10x14") and I have it mounted low and in line with a 20" ride and a 17" china.

    tight.jpg

My 18" crash is mounted next to the 12" rack tom. If I were to go up top on the ride, I would swap positions with the 20" ride and the 18" crash.

And historically my ride cymbal has been over the bass drum on the right side (absent a tom being there). So i'm trying to decide if the ride cymbal being up high feels goofy or i can get use to it. We form habits over our years of playing and when you instinctively go for a space for a crash or ride or splash and its not there any more you have to retrain your muscle memory. What do you guys think about the efficiency of having the ride cymbal up high or down in the traditional location?
For years I played a standard 4pc with the ride over the bass drum, at a low height. When I went back to playing a 2 up setup I went with the ride up over the second tom and haven’t looked back since. I think a lot depends how tall you sit behind the kit. I sit pretty high and I’m 6’2” so it works for me. Having a larger ride helps too, like 21”+.

That Gretsch kit looks great but am I the only one who can’t stand the rims style mounts, especially on such a high end custom kit?

No. The GTS rim mounts do take away from the look of the kit especially in chrome but a greater concern of mine how heavy those things are and how that effects the resonance of the shell as it hangs off of the tuning lugs. If I were to replace mine, I'd opt for Gauger R.I.M.S mounting system. According to Gauger, their aluminum alloy mounts weighs less which allows the shell to resonate better than chrome. I also like the look of the brushed aluminum.

I have used both steel and aluminum R.I.M.S. mounts and currently use the Gauger aluminum mount pictured above on my 12" rack tom. I can say from experience that there is a big, big difference in weight between the two and, after using the aluminum mounts, I'll never go back to the steel mounts. I also prefer the look of the aluminum mount ...

Before i placed my order with Gretsch i went back and forth with having shell mounted hardware vs RIMS mounts. Now that i have the kit and have experimented with how to origami the toms together to get them really close its not that bad. If i could do it all over i would probably just have the shells drilled for the mounting hardware.

FlyByNight...nice cymbal setup. And nice tight setup. Great use of "economy of motion". Is that HH a 21" ride?

    Yes.
The (eye) candy is gone but we can still rock.
Isn't it fun when players 25 or 30 years old tell you they wish they could play that well ?

    Many thanks pocket and late8.

We played a gig last night at a local club and, as usual, the drums got more compliments than the drummer.

built a new Stacks yesterday. Drove to Chicago and visited Vic's Drum Shop and we spent sometime with the guy there and we tested out several combinations.

In the end I went with 14" AAs (Mini China and Thin Crash)
By the time we got home my daughter was passed out so I couldn't play.
So I can't wait to try it out today at lunch!!!

I got exactly what i wanted. I was nervous that Gretsch would just do a traditional duco but there was a lot of back and forth communication with Gretsch prior to starting the order to make absolutely sure I got what i wanted.
iNDiGLo...............that is an amazing Gretsch USA set-up............just beautiful.
I was lucky to get a personal tour of the assembly facility by none other than Paul Cooper (plant manager for many years) when I was in SC a couple of years a go.
Here is a photo of the paint booth and the lady that likely did the perfect job on your duco...............
