I've nearly got a pearl VBX and recently ive been reading up on them and have heard that the iss tom mounts damage the toms and aren't really the best. What can i do about this if it is true?

When mounted properly the ISS mounts work fine.

I've used them before and found them to work just fine, never had any problems. I have heard lots of complaints about them as well though.

I wouldn't say they would "damage" the drum, but there are definitely better tom mounts out there.

i think ill order one of each type of tom mount for a specific drum and put up some reviews after awhile to be sure

one thing i noticed while shopping is they seem to be intended for drum sizes 12-16", so i cant say how well their adaption to other sizes might be

I have had a VSX set with I.S.S. mounts for a couple of year now and haven't had any trouble with the I.S.S. mounts. My tom sizes are 10", 12", and 13". I suspect that over the long haul, the I.S.S. mounts might be hard on stamped metal rims and one might find cast rims a better choice. As for "deadening the sound", I would say that how the heads are tuned will be more of a factor than the type of mount. IMHO

i prolly just read some bad reviews then. so your saying they should be fine for die cast hoops?

Yes, die cast hoops will be fine. The stock rims work but the die cast rims will give those who worry about things, a much higher level of comfort.

Optimounts are fantastic. I have actually seen/know of a few guys who switched out all their ISS mounts for optis. Probably wasn't cheap, but smart.

I have been using one for my Firecracker snare for over a year and have NO issues with it at all.I do agree about keeping tight at all times and making sure that it is straight and sitting where it should be.

They will not fit diecast hoops without modification.

what do you mean? and i see little screws on the top, are those screwed onto the edge of the rim itself? the thing that attracted me was that they dont have to go through the tension rods of the drum, and dont go into the shell.

But they put a lot of pressure on the thin 1.6mm hoops that come on Pearl's low and mid range stuff.

The screws do not go into the rim. They go into the lower part of the mount which clamps on to the rim. I'm not sure either if I.S.S. mounts will go on cast rims. Optimounts look like the best way to go. Yes, they do go on the tension rods but they also spread the load over a bigger area than several other types of mounts and don't go through the shell.
