Sounds like a pretty deep snare. It sounds like the micing has a lot to do with this particular sound. Something 2-ply and rimshots might just be your best bet.

sounds like 8 ply, maple, im guessing around 7 or 8" depth, 13" diameter perhaps? definitely a double ply head it probably doesnt have any muffling because you can hear the reverb in it.

Yeah, I think its a deep wood shell. I also agree that micing (and mix) has a lot to do with it...with a lot of attack and not much resonance (or ring). If you're just practicing, try putting a towel over your snare, it may give you a similar sound.

From what I can find, he's got a Truth kit and uses Remo heads on the snare.
From the Truth website...
I'm guessing the batter head is super cranked, snare side head moderately cranked and the wires a smidge less cranked.Kit: Custom 2 wrap. black ripple with white ripple stripe towards the bottom. chrome hardware. 12×7,16×16,18×16,24×20
Snare: 14×8 10ply Tangerine glass glitter w/ chrome hardware and diecast hoops

It sure does sound good, that's for sure!
Actually, the entire kit does.

the reverb is coming from how its mixed
Anyone know where I can pick up some 8 ply snare heads?
I can't find them on Guitar Center's website or American Musical or anything.
Ah, my noobness shines through.
Well awesome, my kit is already 8-ply :-P. 8-ply birch.
So I should get a 2-ply head for sure?
id say just hit it really hard, like the dude in the video that dude is banging the crap out of that snare drum!!

Well I went and bought a 2-ply head (as well as a tambourine/cowbell combo and a 10" splash [just couldn't help myself, lol]) And I'm definitely not getting that same sound, though it does have more pop and I'm really preferring this one to the prior. I know a lot is probably done in the mix and I'll need to mess with the tuning a bit more, but from experimenting, it looks like most of the sound is definitely in the mix.
Loving it though!
What head did you get? He uses a coated Remo of some sort. I can't tell if there's a reinforcement dot or anything to tell exactly what model it is from any pics.

I wonder what that drum sounds like without $500,000 of studio gear.
