Personally I haven't been a big fan of post 70s Ludwig, then again I don't squat about GMS. Let your ears be the judge and I'm sure you'll make a good choice.
I could use some DC input to set me straight. Found a Luddy CM kit locally and I'm trying to decide if this thing couid be the next set I'm looking for (and maybe get some extra cash).
It matches my GMS sizes drum for drum (10, 12, 14, 16 toms w 22 BD) so I would only keep one kit. I should be able to sell the GMS kit for a few hundred dollars more than the asking price for the Luddies. Both kits coincidentally are 10 yrs old (made during Ludwig's 90th anniversary).
The specs are even pretty close btwn the two kits. 8-ply maple for GMS, 7-ply maple for Luddies (as far as I could find). GMS bearing edges are double 45; I think Ludwig CM bearing edges are similar.
My ears will be the final judge, but I'd like some perspective on pros / cons from DC. This forum definitely offers viewpoints that I never even consider.
Here's my quick list of why I'm considering the deal.
Pros:
Ludwig - the most famous name on drums - never owned 'em
Make some money when it's all done
GMS kit is _heavy_ to lug around (8 ply + brass lugs run top to bottom)
New kit to love!
Cons:
May be too similar in sound (these Luddies are not the legendary 3-ply)
GMS kit was "custom" made for me to my specs
GMS bass drum is virgin (my preference), Luddy BD is not
May not sell GMS kit for as much as I thought
waddya think?

If it was me. Id rather have the Luds.
I have heard nothing but good things about the newer Classic Maples... But I'm somewhat partial to Luddies. I'll also confess that i don't know too much about GMS and have never played on any - I would def. A/B them against your set and let your ears do the thinking if you will.

I love Ludwigs but have to say you might like your C
GMS better. I have a set of classic maple and play my birch set all the time and ptrfer them. That being said can you play the Luds if so do it . Making a little cash is nice but if in the end you dont like them then you loose. Hope this helps a little. Also check bearing edges on luds as some are bad for little nicks
So here's what I know after checking out the Classic Maple kit.
1. It's an at home set - meaning NEVER been gigged. The wrap condition is practically immaculate for 10 yrs old. I couldn't find any scratches. Finish is a black sparkle wrap.
2. Comes with 2 booms, 1 straight, 1 HH, 1 snare stand and BD pedal. Also includes soft cases, a stand bag/case, a drum mat, and some extension arms for extra (splash) cymbals.
3. Includes a... 6.5x14 Supraphonic! I don't think he realized it could be sold alone for some quick cash. Ironically, I found a B/O badge in the same size this year, so I would prolly sell this. Also in great condition.
4. All toms are RIMS mounted, including the 14 and 16. I'm not really a fan on floor toms, but it's not a deal-breaker.
All that for $800. I'm thinking I could get at least $200 more for my GMS kit (no snare, and keeping all my hardware), but who knows in this market. My kit has lots of dings and scratches from many gigs. I included a picture (it still looks great)...
Lastly, the sound... was great. As I suspected, not much different from my GMS kit. I'd say it's a wash until I spent more time with this kit.
Gonna have to sleep on this... and for some reason I cannot upload the pics I have of the Ludwig kit. Keeps failing. So here's my green GMS kit - most of what appears to be scratches are actually reflections from the flash.

Man... That GMS kit is a beauty... I would be hard pressed to ditch that for 10 year old Ludwigs.... And I love Ludwigs.
I bet that GMS kit sounds and plays great.

I'd probably keep the GMS.
Keep the GMS. This would not be a good trade off. I dig Ludwig, but not to the point of fanatical blindness. The only "gain" from the Luddies would be the name, not any sonic performance. The GMS shells are every bit as good. The only reason to buy the Ludwigs is if you just have to be part of the Luddie family, not to make some performance gain.

Don't hesitate, buy the ludwigs! You can't go wrong for $800, plus a 6.5x14 supra, c'mon it'a a no brainer. But if you decide not to buy, please send me the email address of the person selling the kit, I will gladly pay for shipping.
nice price on the luddys, but i would keep the GMS. the supra adds some nice juice to the deal, but still.
maple goodness......
