I've been playing a Meinl cajon for the past four years and I've had good luck with it. I've played everywhere from coffee shops to outdoor festivals and a Hard Rock Café with it.

I thought that it was time for an upgrade and apparently Santa agreed...

I got a Gon Bops Alex Acuna cajon for Christmas!

    Hmm.

Those are very portable as long as it is an outdoor gig, or in a garage.

    Thanks! It's "different"...
Actually, it's a blast to play. I can get bass, snare and several different pitches of bongo sounds from it, depending on where you hit it. Surprisingly resonant as well, considering the construction. I hold it flat across my lap to play it.

Cool Re: Show Us Your Hand Drums

Considering "cajon" is Spanish for "box," N2Bluz, it's amazing how we've come full circle in hand percussion...not to mention that the 1876 Budweiser case replica is a collectible in its own right!

(P.S. to longgun--the steering wheel on my Cruze is similar to yours, but I 'm not sure I'd want to trigger the cruise control on mine (a misplaced rimshot can do that!)
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

When drumming on a steering wheel rim it could be argued that every hit is a rim shot.

Thanks! It's gathered a lot of attention in the 2 gigs I've played it so far. I can't sit on it like a typical Cajon. Partly because I'm not flexible enough, and partly because the sound holes are the handle holes on each end. I hold it across my lap and point the sound/handle hole on the bass side toward the audience. I'm still on a learning curve in terms of playing it. Right now I just play the bass beats with my right hand and snare parts with my left. For fills, I can get several different tom pitches, depending on where I hit it on the top. If I play the side, it sounds just like cross-stick on a snare.

a plenera-type hand drum that was shipped to me from UK. I was inspired by a different kind of drum called a 'bendir'. Installed banjo tuning pegs and ran 2 banjo strings under head. [I also play banjo, so I had the extra parts sitting around]. Tunable from a rattle to a buzz.

Cool! Have been wanting a bendir for a while, although I don't know of any where the snares are adjustable.
