Question What Birch drumkitt to choose?

    Hi all!
I whas on the hunt, to order a Tama Starclassic birch-kitt,
when I whas informed "they don´t produce them anymore"..
So,, What is the closest in quality?
I´m soo bewildered, Due to that I´m not up-dated with other brands.
( bought my current set, Starclassic Maple -01.)

I need it as a option for small venue´s, so I figured to have a 20"x16"
    bas, with matching toms..

With hope that You guy´s have some advice..
I´m living in the (right now) froooozen Sweden,,,
so any European store can be interesting to look in to..

With a big New Year´s Greeting!!!

Well there's the Yamaha Recording Custom, the Pearl Masters BMP & BRP, Sonor SQ2 Birch, then there's also the Mapex Meridian Birch and the Pearl Vision VBX, if you can't afford the higher level ones. Or if you're lucky you could maybe score a Mapex Saturn birch/walnut set. Those are all excellent quality sets.

    Oh, and welcome to Drumchat!

well. if you want something along the lines of a star classic (read price level) but a bit higher up on the food chain, try a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute. i firmly believe that i will never need another drum kit

(not that i don't want more hehe)

All good options mentioned. It really depends on your budget and what kind of kit you are looking for. You could throw Yamaha Stage Customs in the mix if you are looking in a more modest price range.

Older Tamas are a good deal if you want heavy duty, thick shelled, birch drums with power. Superstars, Crestars, Granstar Customs (all lacquered) or Granstar (wrap) are great drums. And you can frequently find kits for like $500+.

You could, of course, also look for the original SC Birch's you mentioned used. When I was poking around a while back online there were a good number of them on eBay and at stores.

    Happy hunting.

Oooh.. Many THAN´x to You all, that reply to my "cry"..
Well, I will try e´bay as mentioned,,,.
So,, older Starclassic Birch is made with thicker shell´s compared
to my current Maple kitt, (2001 )..
Will check the Yamaha set mentioned..
I knew a dealer here that sells Yamaha..
    -Interesting..

    Once again,, many than´x all..!!!!!!

SC Birch might be thicker shells, but I was talking about even older Tamas, from 80's and 90's, before they made Starclassics.

I bought a set of Yamaha Stage Customs for our Church, Birch with a 20" bass, nice sounding drums that are holding up well. They are also very reasonably priced. I'm sure the higher end Yamaha kits if you want to spend a little more are even better.
Gretsch Catalina Birch 6 piece fusion set (10,12,14,16in. Toms, 22 Bass). Sabian 20" HH Classic Ride, 16" Istanbul Agop Dark Crash, & Zildian K 13" Hi-hats.

Stage Customs tend to be on sale a lot too. I'm seeing shell packs fro $399 right now, which is a great deal.

as much as i love mapex.. i'm gonna hand it to the meaty tones of the Tama Birch/Bubinga if it's a hybrid birch kit you are wanting. but for pure birch, the Recording Customs.. they are a legendary birch kit, and sound amazing. just amazing

Never played on the Tama set you speak of, I never trust those YouTube videos of people playing their sets though. Makes the good sound bad and the bad sound good.

Welcome to the board Frippi. It would also help you to take a trip to your local store just to see what each set sounds like. Let your ears decide for you. Best of luck.

Hi All again.. It´s a while since this "matter" was on the agenda..
But,, I stumbled on a new Tama Superstar with a custom made 18" kick drum!
(in the desired laquer, Custom Amber Fade, as well.) sent to a endorsed drummer, for a special event.
After that, the local store got it to sell, with a good discount. The only sign of
use, is that there is Ambassadour on the "top-side" instead..
The kitt was made -08, so they are Birsh/Basswood, but I culdn´t resist this offer.
I´m almost through with tuning now, and I think they very much will meet my expektations....
    So,, Again,,Than´x All !!!!!!
    Bengt
