Pulse Drums - My new setup

I recently bought some Evans Hydraulic heads online, Since then i'll have my set like this. I like it this way cause the ride is near me but i still prefer it with 2 toms.

You guys are telling me to flatten out the tom's angle... I dont really get what you mean, please explain me what i have to do

Nice clean 4 pc setup! I was playing 4 piece for a while, definitely liked it. In the end went back to 5, but it's a great setup.

That tom angle is wild though. Isn't it hard to get a good solid hit with it like that? I'm not a "if it's not flat it's lame guy" but I would thinking flattening it out some might be worth a try.

I think you'll like the hydrualics. Then you can use napkins to wipe your hands instead of taping them to your heads.

you could adjust your tom angle a bit..to save from any later injuries and or carpal syndrome..

When you have big-ish toms mounted on the bass drum, your options are kinda limited. I'm in the same boat, my 12 and 13 toms are on the bass, and so I can either flatten them and put them a mile apart or angle them pretty fiercely.

Tom set up on my old Ludwig... 10,12,13,14 mounted toms and 16&18 floor toms with 2 - 24's. Notice the angles... I really think you'd find it easier to flatten them out a bit... not totally flat by any means, just a bit less angle will help you in the long run with your playing.

Martinez12, looks good only question is..are you left handed? with the snare angled towards the hi-hats it seems that way..or did you just not see that it was that way for pic? and I kinda agree with the rest on tom angle..this to me seems prone to early head failure do to stick striking hard rather than easy stroke that it should be...just an opinion...take care Marty

I have big-ish toms, in fact big toms, although I'm using the 10x10 and 12x11 (instead of the 12 and 13) right now, they are kick mounted and you don't need the angle that steep.



This is from the other angle, but you can see the toms aren't quite so steep and that's with the 12x11 and 13x12. I'm 6'3" which helps.

martinez that's an interesting setup idea, are you trying to get more rebound from the rack tom and less from floor tom?

kaos i notice you tape your resos, does that have a positive effect when you go in to the studio?

See that much height difference between the snare and the toms just feels awkward to me. So I spread some, and angle.

It also has A LOT to do with the mounting system. One of the main reasons I prefer Tama drums is that they use L-Rod mounts with like a uni-ball. It makes positioning toms so friggin' easy! (the set is kaosotis' picture looks like it uses a similar mounting system)

I've never been up close to a Pulse kit, but it looks like they use the same arm-type mounts as Pearl and indeed those are much more of a pain to deal with, in my opinion.

The snare is not one I own anymore LOL. It was a 5.5x14 Tama Metalworks. I like, but not loved it. Got it on super sale new for like $150 and sold it for the same.

Those Tamas are for practice now, playing the Yamahas at shows. I'm using a Ludwig Epic 6x14 with the Tamas. I have the matching snare, but like the sound better on the Epic.

Russ, you'll laugh but the duct tape was to control overtones. Those reso heads were the originals from 1986, and that shot was taken 2 years ago maybe! I had of course changed batters, but never resos. The tape had been on there I would say since about 1990 at the latest and was either put on at a show or in studio, I don't recall.

I finally replaced all the heads with the G2/G1 combo a little over a year ago.

Here ya go. They're pretty easy to adjust, I just can't find a good spot.

This is the mounting system used on my Tama set and it's made me hate all drum sets that use those mounting arms. As you can see, it's in L-Rod connected to a ball joint. The freedom it gives you to position your toms is just great. I'm able to get my toms together nice and snug without having to use a weird angle.
