    Default add on toms

I want to add on to my kit.

I want to add on a 8 and 10 inch tom

I found a Ludwig 10 inch tom for my kit but no 8 inch tom. I then found a 8 and 10 by a no name brand the color is exactly the same except they don't have the sparkle metal flake in it like my kit has.

SOOO I am wondering. Would it be better to buy the 8 and 10 or just the Ludwig 10?

The matching part I think would harldy be noticeable and I am not that anal about having the toms matching perfectly like I said they are the same color just without the sparkle finish like my Ludwigs.

The sound quality I'am sure with some decent heads can't be all that bad and for all practical and practice purposes I think would be ok.

    So Iam wondering any thoughts?

when looking for add on toms, you are first looking for a match of series, finish, and size you don't currently have. if it's not doable to find all three, then you would be looking for just matching series and size you don't have. if you can't find those two, then you should look for something in preferred size but matching finish of a different series. try and find another series of drums that fits in well with your sound. (i.e. don't try a basswood rack tom if you have all birch rack toms, it will upset the balance)

I currently have a Sonor Force 1001 kit which is Basswood, and an add on Gretsch Catalina Stage 10" tom. This is made of Mahogany. For me, this works just fine. It seems to blend well, and doesn't sound off to my ears. My thought would be if you can find one that matches color, try to find a way to hear it by your kit, and see how it sounds. Just my .02

Here is the link to e-bay where I found them.

Not much as far as description goes.

*sorry Lil drummerboy, but Forum Rules prohibit the commercial link - PB*

They are concert toms like what I have now

Lil Drummerboy, those are 9 ply "mahagony" shells. I assume that they would be Philippine Mahagony AKA Luan wood, which is a cheap wood commonly found on beginner kits. The question would be, what wood are the Ludwig shells made of?

why not try a more exotic sound. like the dw picolo tom or the pdp mini timbale (both are 8 inch, though i prefer the dw). you could add on the ludwig and get one of those, and have really exotic sounds.

I would say stick to whatever series your ludwigs are already so they would match in sound. I have mapex v series and I recently found a v series 8" tom to fit my kit for cheap on ebay.I just replaced the top head and it was good to go. you could try that and be patient as the right size toms might not be for sale right away.

if you are looking for a different voice, dw piccolo toms or even drumset timbales would be a good choice. not only for a variety of sounds throughout your kit, but they mount relatively easy as they don't take up a ton of space due to shell depth of a traditional tom.

anton, all I can suggest is to keep combing through CL, and eBay until one pops up. There has to be an 8" Red Sparkle PDP CX tom out there with you name on it. The trick is being patient enough to find it when it does come up.
