I have always used these terms interchangeably but something I heard has led me to believe that they are in fact different. So what's the difference between them?

resonance is the ring, sustain is how long it lasts.
so then those dampening rings and moon jell stuff shorten both resonance and sustain?

Moongels do damper both, but the have far more effect on the sustain of the drum. This will change of course depending on what kind of drum you are hitting, and where you place the moongel.
I love moongels btw. Whoever thought of those is a genius.
But do they go hand in hand, or is it possible to reduce sustain without effecting resonance, or the other way around?
