Thinking of trying to make a snare from mesquite, anyone ever played one?

I have not played one, but Mesquite is a very dense hardwood. It will most likely be very loud with tons of bright attack.

I know it's above maple in that hardness scale. I guess if it sounds bad I could use it for decoration or to smoke a brisket.

I have plenty of big stuff to pick from, green and dried. I'm not sure if I want to do solid(lathed down),multiple plies or stave yet. Be fun but would probably take me awhile to finish one.
