    Default Recording drums.....on a budget....

ok i have a mic set and i know how to get good sounds from them......but what way do you guys record......
    drums first
    guitar/bass
    vox?

the problem we are having is that when we use a click track the drum mics pick it up and if we put the click track through some headphones he can't hear the click track!
    any help would be appreciated...

My old band used this method(this method is only used if the band cannot record together)But I highly recommend recording together live, you just don't get the right feel or excitement playing to prerecorded track, the energy is just not there.

Record a rough guitar track for the song you want to record, then the drummer would go in and lay down the final drum track for the foundation, and then the rest of the instruments record following the drums.

    Basic guitar track
    Final drums
    final Bass
    redu guitar 1
    final lead guitar
    final vocals
    anything else

this is just how we did it, goodluck.

usually you use a metronome and do drums
then bass, then rhythym guitar, then lead guitar and then vocals and then backup vocals.

I agree with everything Ddrumbum said except for the ruff guitar first. Which does help the drummer, but often if you do this, the guitar can be recorded off time and then everything else can be recorded offtime as a result.

Just do the drums first and then everything after that.

Amp actually the guitar player will play to a MET, and so does the drummer, so the timing should be dead on, if you don't have a rough guitar track, what is the drummer going to play to, he can't just play from memory, unless you have another idea, just my thought, later.

Really, ya I always record from memory. That's what my fellow band members always said is how it was done. And I always thought that would be really hard. But ya it would make sense to record a rough guitar track. It would be so much easier that way for us!!!

well if you practice as much as we do, it kind of gets ingrained into your memory

I think anyways. The only problem for me, is when we have like breaks in between parts in the songs and maybe im not playing for a bit. Then I kind of get lost.

Ill tell the guys about playing a rough guitar track over though. It makes more sense.

You have the guitarist and the drummer play the 1st track. You just don't record the guitarist. They both 'feel' the song from each other. The drummer plays to the metronome or beat track to keep the tempo for the song constant.

Thats just another way of doing it.

Fair enough but the thing is if we use a metronome/click track that the drummer can actually hear the drum mics pick it up and if we put the click track through headphones he can't hear the click track/met anyway!?
would you use the metronome as an acoustic guide or as a visual guide?

maybe if u can use the acoustic as an aid even if it is quiet, and use the visual also. Even if he cant hear the acousitc very well, he'll be able to hear it better if he is using the visual aid also.

    Try that
