when my band played at a high school battle of the bands, my drums were miced, i have a porthole in the bass drum, so the guy stuck an internal mic in it (shure beta 91 i think) and a regular bass drum mic (the kind thats on a low stand that goes right in front of the port hole) was also used

It's to dedicate the inside mic to pick up the transients while the outer mic picks up the lower frequencies. Creating a real defined intense low end thump. Metalica's And Justice For All really exploits this attribute, a constant in heavy metal. But you say "in front of the hole" wich will pick up a undefined cloudy woofy sound. Usually it's to the side of the hole.

depends on how far the mic is into the hole. This help to define and pick up the strike of the kick pedal. In addition, I am assuming the mic is gated with a very tight trigger.
