Well, unfortunately, the heads are going to make the most difference......I have a Remo Powerstroke 3 on my kick (also a 22"), and an Evans EQ Pad inside, and it absolutely THUNDERS.
I've got the Performance II's on the toms, but can't afford the Super Kick heads yet. Is there anyway to make the bass drum sound lower and have more of a solid sound? My tom heads are tuned really low, and it makes the bass drum sound like junk now.. I heard you can tape some felt on to the resonant head. (Is that right????) Oh, I do have some cotton stuffed in it right now. (like what pillows are stuffed with) That stuff is pretty light. I may try a comforter next! BTW, I've got a 22" bass if that helps..
When we do right, no one remembers. When we do wrong, no one forgets.

Word to the wise : don't mess with the drummer.
Don't tape the felt to the head!!! What you want to do is take the resonant head off, stretch a piece of felt (about 6" wide) across the drum, then put the head back on so the head itself is what holds the felt in place. A couple of the old timers.......err......I mean, experienced drummers at one of my local shops taught me that trick and it works great!

BTW I also agree with BTG.. Remo Powerstroke 3's for the batter head.. they totally rock and can take a beatin' if you're a heavy hitter.
