Default Best kit for under a grand

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I can't find it. Anyhow, if you had a grand to spend on a new drum set, as in hardware, shells, symbols, all but the throne and kick pedal, what would it be? Thanks in advance.

I hate to push you over $1000, but if you can stretch it a bit more...

The Yamaha Stage Custom Birch (20" or 22" kick / 14" or 16" FT), complete with Yamaha single braced hardware (kick pedal, snare stand, HH stand, two boom stands) w/ birch snare, can be purchased from a national retailer for $899.99.

This doesn't leave you much for cymbals, especially after tax, however you may find some used PST 5 hats and ride to get you started (lower end Paiste that sound good).

Another option is this kit is offered in a 4 pc. configuration with a 24" kick (make sure you research a 24" kick, it's huge), and steel snare for $399.99 Couple that with a cheaper hardware pack from Gibraltar ($289) and now your looking at $688.99. That would leave you more for entry level cymbals. I prefer the first option I listed.

You will get other suggestions I'm sure. This is just one idea from a Yamaha Fanboy!

MF is clearing out '09 Meridian Birches for $650 with the full hardware pack included, which leaves you enough money to buy new mid-level cymbals or even used high-end cymbals.

The Custom Classic's look very good for the money. Suppose I was to go used, what kind of set would you look for in that range?

For $1000 dollars you should find a good mid-level kit with cymbals.

Yea, but I am new to this and was wondering what a "mid level" kit was, like which Yamaha series, or Pearl series, etc etc

+1 on this. Tam Sups are great, but I would go with the Pearl Sessions over the Visions if you can find them...if you had a choice that is!

How do the all birch Custom Classics compare in sound to the Yamaha SCB? I think drumhedd owns both kits...what's your take (if I'm right on that).
