Default Events of the last couple of months!

Hi guys, it's good to be back here at DC! Just thought I'd fill you in on a couple of cymbal issues over the last month or two.

Well to start, a crack appeared through my 15" Stagg DH Crash around 2 months ago, as I was horrified to discover! I immediately reviewed how I was playing, and as a result loosened the winguts on all my stands and changed my cymbal technique. However, this was a little too late for my 16" Stagg DH Crash, which I also spied a small crack on.

Now, I couldn't not play my cymbals, and I knew that there was nothing I oculd do about the cracks, except replace the crashes when I got the money. So I carried on playing them, and yesterday a nice chunk came off my 16". So this morning I went out cymbal hunting. Here's the story...

The first music shop I went into turned out to be a surprise. I came across an amazing deal...a secondhand 16" Zijdian Avedis Rock Crash for only 70. I checked the cymbal all over...no cracks, no logo wear, edges were perfectly round, the hole in the middle wasn't worn - it was all too good to be true. There was actually nothing wrong with it. So I tried out the cymbal, and quite liked it, but wasn't sure about it still.

So I went and got advice from my more local drum store about the situation, and while I was in there I came across a brand new 16" Istanbul Xist Crash, and had to try it out. I was absolutely blown away. So I walked out of the shop with the 99 16" Istanbul Xist Crash in favour of the 70 16 Zildjian Avedis Rock Crash. I never thought I'd see the day! The big 2 companies definately have strong competition here!

Anyway, enough of me rambling...here are some pics of the new addition to the family!

I remember that Frank used to speak very highly of the Istanbul cymbals. Congrats on the new addition Chazbo.

Nice buy Chazbo, glad to hear you are happy with it. Istanbul makes amazing cymbals, old turkish style hammering at its best! I have a vintage pre-split 19" deep ride with 2 rivets, I'm using it as a left side jazz ride and it's just awesome. The Turks really know what they are doing, Istanbul, Bosphorus, Masterworks, TRX, Soultone, and a few others are putting some pressure on the big 3. If you don't know these names, be sure to check them out.

Don't forget Tuckish. Basically the same as Istanbul, in fact I have a Turkish Ephesus crash...but Ephesus is an Istanbul line...

Thanks for adding that, there are others too. The majority of these are comming out of the same factory and are silkscreened with the name of the company that is importing them. I've seen TRX and Soultone cymbals with engravings that say Masterwork, so there ya go. They are all excellent handmade cymbals and worth checking out! Remember though, all of these Turkish cymbals are hand hammered, no 2 will sound alike, so it's best to buy in person or atleast with a sound clip online.

Fortunately, I have a friend who has a small warehouse of these and other high-end cymbals that are currently just being stored. I get my pick! Looking at a good ride next.
