Why do people make a big deal about female drummers?

Probably because they are relatively rare. Sometimes it's good for young women to have role models that share some of the same challenges that are unique to their gender in what has historically been a male dominated activity. The thing is that music is a great equalizer, where women can compete on a equal playing field, if ability is the true measure. In team sports, we have the NBA and the WNBA. We have men's gymnastics and women's gymnastics and so on. In music, other than false bias, anyone can and should be able to compete for any spot based on their ability. Now we won't likely see a female drummer in KISS any more than we would see a male drummer in the Go-Gos, but...

I've been following Senri Kawaguchi for about 8 years now. What a talent! She is definitely going places. Don't know why but out of all of her videos that I've seen, this is my favorite one to watch. I believe that she was around 11 or so at the time:
