Got this from someone that understands e drums way more than I do.
Round-robin is just a technique where a sample pool is created, so you may have 4 - 10 snare hits in just a particular velocity range, and the engine plays back a different hit each time (randomly). The thing about an acoustic drum is, every time you hit it, the sound is slightly different. These are usually very minor variations in timbre, but when you hear the exact same sample played over and over, that is what contributes to "machine gun" sound, which is probably the most telling sign of it being "electronic". So those very minor variations actually make a bigger difference in application than one might think.
