I found great deals on lugs and such from Billy Blast drums. Everything you need to build a set. He is a nice guy and is based in California. He builds some killer drum sets too.
Russ inspired me!
keller shells
8ply 22x20 bass drum
6ply 12x10, 13x11, 16x16 (im still thinking about the snare)
2 bass drum hoops, 6 hoops for the toms. spurs etc.
basically the things im unsure of and i need help is the different kinds of hoops lol. um, if i need to get drilling done by the company im ordering this stuff from?
im just unsure where and what my checklist needs to be to do this. maybe i should just order a tom? and do one peice at a time and make sure its what i want? idk..i needs ideas!

Hey that's very cool to be considering drmn. I recommend you figure out exactly what parts you need for each drum before ordering though. It's a smart idea in your first project to let the company do the drilling, until you feel comfortable doing it yourself. Hope it all goes well for you, and welcome to the world of DIY/custom! Make sure you know which sites have which stuff, and who sells the cheapest. Knowing the best sources for parts is going to be half the battle.

I want to do the same thing because Ive never had a new set and have been playing the one I have now for over 30 years.
My plans were to make the snare first to see how hard and time consuming it is and if it works out then do the rest of the set.
I just dont have enough spare time right now, but I still want to do a snare one of these days.
Let us know how you make out with it.

On a more related note, i'm a big fan of 10 ply for snares- as I seem to get a nice balance of volume and resonance with them(I like 8 for everything else). 8 and 10 are probably my favorite ply counts for custom kits hands down. Another cool thing, is if you ever want an add on drum of another size, it will always be available- you just order the finish with the other parts/size you need and you got your add on.

Hi drmn4life. you will need to make considerations regarding bearing edges and snare beds. Are you going to have them done for you or do them yourself? I have built quite a few snare drums, shell sand all, so I could probably give you some help if time allows (looks like we're neighbors). Also, don't drill any holes untill you have all of your hardware in hand so that you can get an accurate mock up with accurate measurements.

hey everyone thanks a lot for the advice, but i think i have decided against building a drumset, cuz i pretty much need a drumset pretty badly lol, and if i build one i risk messing up or not being happy with it. alsoi feel like like building a custom drum kit should be good for me once i have a good amount of change in my pocket, as a little project. know what i mean? but prolly def in the future im going too, maybe even at the end this year, i still might make a custom snare tho, i have that pork pie lil squeeler one and i dont like the way its recorded for some reason..but ya..thanks everyone!
