    Default Removing lacquer finish?

I have a peace onyx kit in black lacquer that's scratched up like crazy. I was wondering if there was any way of removing the lacquer and refinishing them? Here's some pics.

use Air craft stripper, you buy it auto paint supply stores, it is strong and will take most of it off and then you can sand the rest to refinish how you choose.

Acetone works wonders. 1 gallon cost is about $12-15 US$. Evaporates quick, need to use in vented area with lots of air circulation. Use rubber gloves and avoid skin contact. acetone will dry hands to a point where they will crack.

Use 100 grit stripping sand paper and dip it into the acetone (use small bowl or old tupperware bowl) and start stripping away the finish. acetone drys fast. You can sand the rest of what's left on the surface

Acetone would work well to take the glue off once you pull wrap off, but I don't think it is strong enough to take a dried laquer finish off easily. it will soften it and take some off but it will be alot more work than stripper will be, I paint race cars and boats on the side and when I want to make short work of stripping something, I always turn to air craft stripper.

What will aircraft paint remover do to the wood? Guess you could take the first layer or two of laquer off, then start with the sandpaper, that aircraft paint remover is some STRONG stuff

gigging without drumcases if you have a laquer finish is a bad idea, i have a wrapped kit, so i dont really need cases, but i proabably will get some eventually, but il proabably eventually get a lauqered pearl MCX or Reference, and if i had one i wood never not use cases

I don't know what acetone and aircraft stripper will do to wood, so i recommend furniture stripper- meant to take finishes off of wood without removing the patina of the wood- regarding your bearing edge- don't sand them and you won't wreck them- they probably don't have lacquer on them anyways- don't forget safety- rubber gloves, goggles or a full face shield, and ventilation!

It wont hurt the wood anymore than acetone of furniture stripper. All it is is a little stornger (same formula) as furniture stripper or varnish srtripper. The wood will sand out beautifully. laquer on dums in no longer nitro celluelos (sp) Old school laquer. it is a variance of urethane clear that is applyed on autos. My point is that the air craft stripper is used to strip auto and aircraft paint and it will make short work of stripping your drums. acetone will take for ever to eat into urethane and strip it from wood. Trust me the aircraft stripper will not hurt the wood just follow the directions on the can and you will be good to go. And like funkyruss stated tape off and stay away from sanding your bearing edges, you should not have to touch those.
