    Question Snare wire tension

Would tightening the snare wires tight make them loose and unusable in a short period of time since they are made of metal or no?

Nik, the tighter you make them, the less snare sound you will get. I don't think you will damage them by tightening them up for a little while, but why are you wanting them so tight?

I`m looking for a defined and short snare sound and I thought maybe tightening it up would give me that.
I hate how when I do fast single stroke fills it sounds like I`m doing rolls on the snare.
How can I make the snare quick and snappy sounding?

The rule of thumb I use for snare wire tension is that I can hear the snare sound at even the softest dynamic level. If i tap on the snare very, very lightly, and it sounds like a tom, I know the wires are too tight.

This depends also on what kind of snare drum you have. The real cheapys are the worst for snare buzzing etc. If your snare is half decent then go by what is suggested in this post. I never have that problem but my snare is all maple and also have a couple of chrome steel and no problem with the snares either.
