    Default New West African Project

Lately I've had a lot of free time on my hands and have been pretty bored, so last week I gave one of my old teachers a call to see if he wanted to get together and mess around on some drums. Turns out he just got back in town after working a gig on a cruise ship for the last 6 months, and he was eager to get a project going. So yesterday we got together and setup in a nice shady spot at a highschool to go over a few African rhythms. He was on djembe, and I was on dun duns (african bass drums). Duns are typically played on the side like a marching bass by 3 different players, but we had it setup "ballet" style where I was playing all 3 drums with the heads facing up like marching tenors. We got 3 pieces down pretty solid and had a real blast playing together again. We're both really excited about getting a project going and playing some gigs around town. We're trying to line up 1 more djembe player and a blaphone marimba player to round out the group. In the mean time I'm getting free lessons and learning some really killer traditional grooves !

Hey, bro', glad to see that you turned "time on your hands" into "skins under your hands!" Looks like you're on your way to some great sounds...

keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

    Bro, you're such a wordsmith!

FT I wish you were here too, we could definitely use another set of hands.

We had our second rehersal last night, learned 2 new pieces. We now have 5 pieces down pretty good. I'm having a blast playing the dun duns, I feel like I'm in drumline all over again. The way African drumming is structured is so similar to drumline, its kinda funny. I'm hoping that after a few more rehersals we'll have enough material to start playing a few gigs around town.

It'll probably be a while before we record anything. In the mean time, here are a few of the pieces we are playing.
