    Question Drum Heads For Toms???

I have remo pinstripes over clear ambassadors right now but I really don`t like the plasticy sound the pinstripes give off when I hit it. (I'm a decent tuner and no, I don't have the heads extremely loose.) I feel like the pinstripes give off too much stick definition.

I going to get new batter heads soon and I was thinking about getting coated heads since they give off a warmer tone. I'm kind of leaning towards getting the coated emperors but i wanted to ask you guys first.

So my question is, what batter heads are going to give me a non plasticy, not too defined(as in stick definition), warm, and low end tone???

Please only suggest remo heads because I'm a newb when it comes to drum heads. (I'll try other brands when I gain more experience.)

    Thanks

I love the Emperors. I too use them over Ambassadors, and they sound incredible. Good for a deep booming tom sound, and tune super easy. Remo ftw!

Either coated ambassadors or coated emperors would work just fine. The coating on the heads will make the drum sound more warm and it will not have that "plastic" sound when struck. Ambassadors will allow for a little more tone, while emperors will allow for more durability.

    Thanks guys

So the coated ambs are single ply, so it has more resonance but not much durability, and the double ply coated emps are durable but don't resonate as much right??

Exactly right. 1 ply will last you a couple months compared to 2, which could probably last you 6 if you have good technique.

And about pinstripes giving off a lot of stick definition, i don't come across that at all. Plasticy... Yeah it feels that way sometimes, but i'm not followig the stick definition part
So itchie, how did the kick sound?

I stopped using Pinstripes for that exact reason. I switched to coated Evans G2's (for you it would be coated Remo Emperors) and there was immediately a huge improvement in sound. The coating takes away most of the plasticy stick sound

Yesssss lol. It feels good to have people agree with you haha

Why is it that Evans are so popular now???
Would you say that coated G2's sound better than the coated Emps?

I can't speak for anyone else but the reason I chose Evans over Remo is because their coating lasts a lot longer. Remo's get stick marks within the first week and look totally worn out after a couple months. My Evans heads took 6 months to start showing stick marks (except for the snare).

Ohhh thats why. Maybe I should get Evans then.
So the Evans Coated G2's over Clear G1's = Coated Emps over Coated Ambs??
Also, would it be weird if I did Coated G2's over Remo Clear Ambs? Because thats what I have on my toms right now for resos.

Yep coated G2 over clear G1 = coated Emp over clear Ambo.

And no it would not be weird to mix brands if you already have the right resos.

I dunno, I love my pinstripes. I use those RemO's (rings), Dead Ringers or whatever you call them to give the drums a warmer/deeper tone. Those plastic rings that lay on the edge of the heads. If I feel like going all Keith Moon I'll take them off. Anyway, my heads are almost ten years old and they still sound great. I guess longevity is one of the pinstripes attributes that I like. They should really sound dead after all this time, but they don't. I wouldn't like them as much witout the RemO's though.

Right now i'm using single ply texture coated aquarian over classic clear. Amazing sound, can be played open or muffled a bit for some focus. So good...

+1 to evans coats lasting longer.
Personally, I use the Evans Onyx, 2-ply Coated batter and remo resonance.
It's got a great warm tone, with a good amount of resonance.
Also, if you find you can't compromise on resonance vs. durability, look for moon gels.
