Keith Moon- He was the original "busy" drummer.
This should be fun.
Who comes to mind as the busiest drummer you can think of at the moment? Even more specifically, who is consistently busy for every song they play?
Let's say that maybe they are playing for the song... if the song was written by a drummer.
I'll start with Mike Portnoy. Much of his stuff is, well, busy... (almost always in a good way).
I'm hoping this will turn me on to some drummers that I haven't listened to in a while or maybe even heard yet... so sorry if mine is so obvious.

Any grindcore drummer. Any of them.
Some of the busiest I've heard was on Dave Weckl's Masterplan album.

I think Tony Royster Jr. is quite a busy drummer. Video related:

Never liked Keith Moon too much because he was just too busy. (sacralige, I know) I like a little more structure.
And the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe, and saw. . .
The Dead duo- Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Also Sunny Ortiz, the percussionist for Widespread Panic is all over the place
Wow Riverr1 - that Journey song was a revelation!
They clearly took a page from the book of Genesis and went from experimental to mega-pop. I'll bet that drove the "hardcore" fans absolutely nuts. I knew Journey changed gears, but I really never heard any of their stuff that wasn't on the radio in the 80's (ALL the time, BTW).
I have to mention (any chance I get) that I have Steve Smith's twin brother snare drum. I was told that my Jeff Ocheltree Phantom Steel snare was one of two... the other one sold to SS. Sure enough, the exact snare I own is on his instructional DVD from a few years back.
That's as close as I get to drumming glory!

I can't believe no one else has mentioned Mitch Mitchell from the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Very busy. Total jazz background.

I have to mention that I thought of Moon first.
Proudly playing:
Doc Sweeney Drums
A bunch of snares
A bunch of cymbals
Off-Set double pedals
I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!
Off the top of my head I'd have to say Mike Portnoy

Well, busy drummer as in busy life, Joey Jordison. :P He's got stuff lined up for the next two and a half years, he doesn't get a break. And when he's done, i'm going to drum for Slipknot. Thats my life goal.
Busiest drummer in a song? No one's said Chris Adler, i'm surprised. Also Mike Portnoy, and Tony Royster Jr.
Busiest drummer in business? Lars Ulrich. Total businessman.
So itchie, how did the kick sound?

Yea mate, the band picked up Perry and went Pop! It did hurt the fussion prog fans.
This isn't Smith playing though. This is Ansley Dunbar. Went to the States when Zappa wanted a drummer that could read.
Great find on the snare.

Riverr1 reminded me of a good "busy" Zappa drummer. The incomparable Terry Bozzio!
