    Love that beat.

So, I set out to teach myself to play it. And in just one day, I have learned it.

I know the sticking and the bass part.

If only I could actually put it together

My hand and foot want to do the SAME things. I can play variations of beats, but hands and feet have to be on the SAME time.

I am pretty darn new, and I know it is a pretty complicated piece. So, not TOO discouraged that I can't put it together YET. ( I WILL. I WILL. I WILL)

While I know I have a long ways to go in actually playing this all together, I am kind of happy I can do the parts seperately. A couple months ago, I would not have been able to even hear the parts never mind play them.
Sorry if that sounds lame to those of you who have played for a long time.

Any tips for building the independence I need?

Actually, I think this is where you should take a step back and be happy with the fact that you can play parts of the song correctly. Start playing some other songs that have given you some trouble in the past and see where you are at with these. Then after taking a break go back to this song and see where you are at. I'm just going by what I found works best for me. Sometimes you may run into a song that may be over your head but at the same time you can play certain parts. Instead of frustrating yourself with trying to get it perfect, be content that youre able to handle some of it and down the road you will find it a bit easier to handle. Sorry, kind of rambled on there a bit.

ive been trying to get this song (or a few other variations of the purdie shuffle) for a good year now. Those ghost notes just kill me... it's gonna be a great day when i finally crack that damn thing open. it's one of my favoritest beats ever.

This was one of the first beats I wanted to learn, 30 years ago. My instructor humored me and showed me a simplified version of it. That beat takes quite a while to get right, so we're there with you.

Now, if I could get the 'reversed' Purdee shuffle (based on that beat) on Rosanna right. . . . .
And the trees are all kept equal by hatchet, axe, and saw. . .

Does it take a special person to be able to seperate the hands and feet, or will I get it with time and practice?

I love playing the Purdie Shuffle. I do a cool variation of it playing the hi-hat part on a cowbell and the ghost notes on the hi-hat keeping the same snare downbeats and bass drum pattern. It sounds really tribally, very hip. I suggest playing around with it, there are so many cool variations you can do.

Chew, just keep at it, independence is one of the hardest things to grasp when you're starting out. Your limbs are trained to work together, and it takes lots of time and practice to retrain them to act independently of eachother. The purdie shuffle is a pretty advanced groove, just keep at it.

It's a tough beat to do. That you tube vid is pretty good at breaking the parts down. It gives you a great way to attack it.

This helped me understand the shuffle a little bit better for Rosanna and FITR. I still don't have it down as good as I'd like.

Maybe for a brief history lesson and get comfy with ghost note, we should all take a look at Bernard himself

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puEVs4g6qyk"]YouTube- Bernard Purdie shuffle pt.2[/ame]

Then came Bonham "Fool in the rain" version, followed by the ToTo "Rosanna from the indenial shuffle master himself Jeff Porcaro.

Rosanna half-time shuffle is probably the most complicated of the three because as Jeff said himself, he added 1/2 shuffle to the feet instead of shuffle. I haven't mastered the shuffle & half time shuffle yet and Fronzo lessons is the one which helped me to reproduce it as near as I could. All of that because I already mastered heel-toe technique for the fast double and the triplet with ghosted middle note with my hands.

FITR is not an easy song, by any means so you shouldn't feel bad. Funny how Rosanna seems like such a simple song when you listen to it, but when you see and hear the drum track, it's a whole different world! Porcaro was such a great drummer, one of the best lesser known there ever was.

I was doing a simplified version for one of our songs and it came out ok. It really took the song in a new, and I think better direction than it was originally with the straight 8th note pulse. I eventually beefed up the kick drum patterns, but not too much as I wanted to fit the song. Sorry for the poor lighting.

Never been sure about the "Purdie Beat" attribution thing. Here's a bit a of different take on ghost noting that will help. Pay attention to the left hand after 1:15.

    chewgravel219,
just for fun, play the "shuffle" pattern on all the toms and you get a very Ginger Baker-like gallop. Makes it more fun to do and opens up a whole new area of patterns that aren't noticeable with hi-hat-snare combo. But don't drag the left hand-let it bounce nearly in time to the right hand.

Sorry for forgetting this earilier. Bonham said that John Steel, drummer for the animals, was a big influence on him and the animals were also a big influence on Plant. Considering that half the old blues songs on Zepplin's first two albums had been done by the animals it's not hard to see and hear the influence.

Bonham's great groove came from being able to play right on top of the progression while also being able to fill in spaces of the progression. Fool in the Rain is a great example of this in which ghost notes are essential. The thing about Bonham though was his hard hitting. His ghost noting isn't really ghosting when compared to many other drummers.

It's often said that to understand a musician you have to understand what influenced him which is why I posted the video. Here are a few more that you can hear influenced Bonham. Bonham was 12 to 16 when most of these songs came out.
