How does one clean cymbals that have been stored in bad conditions for years?

I have a chance to get some used, but they have mold on them.

What is the best way to clean them?

How much of the original value is lost?

Any info or opinion is appreciated.

There's cymbal polish that most cymbal brands make... I'd use Paiste Cymbal cleaner and Paiste Cymbal protector... Use both of them and they'll make your cymbals clean and shiny again :D
Paiste Alpha 14'' Sound Edge hats
    Paiste Alpha 16'' Medium Crash
    Sabian XS20 14'' Medium-Thin Crash
    Wuhan 16'' China

I would clean them with soap and water to kill the mold and then clean them with the aboved mentioned. Mold can get nasty.

Would they be ruined though for sitting like that for so long?

I don't think so...as long as they're not rusted or physically damaged in any way. I've had some of my Zildjians for over 25 years and they still sound great.

the real question is do you care about the badges on the cymbal, ei. zildjian...

if not, just get a cooper/brass cleaner from the store and use some elbow grease.

What percentage of the original price would they be worth?

Considering they are probably 20 hrs old.

You need to know models otherwise they could just be random Chinese cymbals from twenty years ago.

They are all Zildjian except for a Paiste splash

I'll have to do a little research to see what they were new.

I want to be fair to the guy that is selling them, but not stupid and pay too much either.

I still have several Zildjian A cymbals from the mid seventies that I currently use. They still sound as good as they did back when I got them.

the way i look at it, if the seller doesnt know, thier loss, they should research before selling, unless its your friend.

but as far as prices, what size and series?

The seller is not a good friend. More a friendly acquaintance. But he is a good guy, and I would not knowingly take advantage of anyone. That's not my nature.

On eBay, the stands sell for around $30 used. These are not in great shape, so I think around $20 is fair.

The high hats were sold on ebay for between $85 and $150. Because these need some serious elbow grease, would $85 be fair? Pretty much the same for the ride.

All depends on how nice you want to be, I guess.

Maybe you can put the ball back in his court, just a bit.
Offer lowball price "as they sit" and closer to fair market price if he makes them non-moldy and shiny again
(Assuming they're just very grungy, and no significant physical damage is present)

You'd be surprised how many people might consider taking 'whatever' to avoid a little hard work.
Or, you never know... you might end up paying fair value for clean, presentable gear.

Price them according to the care he gave them.

If they were valuable enough to him to take care of them, then pay fair market value.
Since they were worth nothing to him......... get them as cheaply as possible.

    Then do your cleaning.

    Start with soap and water.

Let them soak overnight in a heavy Dawn/water mix. Then wash them down using a non abraisive cloth.
    No steel wool
    No scotch brite pads.

After youve done that much...... then think about cleaners.

Dude, you're gonna rip yourself right out of a good deal. Fact is, that guy neglected them for years even decades. Remember the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure"? Pay the man for what he sees them to be, not how you see them. Good luck !

    Dudette to you

I will just see what he values them at and go from there.

I never think it right to take advantage of people, so do want to be fair, but not stupid.

Good advise tossed out here CG, good luck on the deal and if you want to preserve any of the logo on those cymbals then go over the logo with anything abrasive cause that will remove the logo.

You probably did the deal already, but I want to emphasize...

Make sure you know the model.

Everyone seems to imply they'll be standard issue vintage Zildjian ("A's"), but if they were made in the 80's or later, they could very well be lower end ... Scimitars, Amirs, whatever.

That would definitely lower the asking price, IMO.

+1 right there. Don't pay what you think they are worth... unless it's lower than what the seller thinks! Good luck.

Still don't have a price on them.
Just told to use them as they are not doing anyone any good sitting in an old trunk.

I am pretty sure I will get a fair deal. He's a good guy.
