    Default Wood Poll

Ok, so in order to get some opinions, I have decided to get a poll on what woods people would use for a solid shell kit that I posted about in another thread. Moderators, if you would like to delete previous thread that is up to you.

Realize I am dealing with simple wood, nothing crazy, but choices I am going to put on the list are

    1: Maple
    2: Birch
    3:Mahogany
    4: Walnut
    5: Oak
6: Mix and Match different drums

Keep in mind this kit will end up with a natural finish, so my first inclination of a mix and match kit would have different grains and colors but it is still a valid option.

    Thanks so much

Maple here for the best sound for most styles of music. IMHO. As for grain, if you don't like the maple grain look, pick the one that you like the best for the last layer. I'm sure that there are other woods available through your, uncle is it?

Yeah my uncle, its just a matter of finding wood that is big enough. 24 inch diameter trees aren't just everywhere, but findable none the less, he has alot of wood he can get, it is the wood that is big enough of the right type that might be the issue, but with patience he will find it.

I voted walnut for two reasons -
1). I am interested to see what a natural walnut finish would look like as a drum kit, as far as I know there are many shades of walnut dependant on where it has grown etc
2). I would love to hear what a walnut kit sounds like, it has really interested me.

    All the best with it.

I voted maple and here's why: at drum camp we discussed new kinds of woods and materials in drums and everyone agreed that maple and birch will always reign as tone woods for drums. We've always used them, we've branched out, but it's all marketing ploys (that's somewhat of an exaggeration). We'll always come back to maple and birch.

What kind of sound do you want bg? Generally the softer woods will have lower warm tones with less projection while harder woods will have higher/brighter tones with more projection. So from warm to bright it would be walnut, mahogany, maple, birch, oak. They certainly can vary though, but this is a good starting guide. Personally I like low warm tones, so walnut or mahogany would be my choice, but what sound do you like?

Long story short. I've always voted on maple, but I just bought a set of birch and I really like the sound.

There are just so many variables in drum sunds. Today we have a unlimited range of different drum heads, and tuning has become an art in itself. So with all of these factors I don't believe the wood really makes that much difference. That's sjust my opinion. John

Well for the first start of this, it appears that maple is getting the biggest reviews and interest, but considering that this is the typical big drum wood, or birch, I guess I can understand that.

Will keep poll open for now, but think I am going to give the uncle a call and have him look in inventories for those two mainly, and find out what he has available for me in the next few weeks, just to see if they are possible.

Thank you so much for everyones input. It is very appreciated.

    Will keep everyone updated.
