I too was once looking for more pop. I found it in the Evans genera HD dry batter head. Might be as simple as a different batter head. The snare was quite a challenge for me at first but feel confident about tuning it now. Jmo. F/T
I can tune my snare alright but I can never get it to sound like poppy like a hip hop snare.
I know you are supposed to tune the batter tight but I just end up choking it and it's really frustrating.
I have a 14x5.5 pearl sensitone steel snare drum with a coated ambassador over a standard remo snare side head.
Can you guys give me advice on how to get that hip hop sound?
I know this is a small snare and I won't be able to get it to sound like this with the snare I have but this is what I am aiming for.

A head with a dot would probably help, like an Evans Power Center. But the best thing to do would be to find a small piccolo snare like 12" or 13".

I have the Pearl Sensitone snare and it had a lot of pop of which I do not like. You need to put a coated single ply Ambassador or G1 and tighten her up with no muffling and believe me she will pop. I have the G2 on mine now and it has a nice smooth metally sound compared to the pop of the single ply.
