Maple is a much lighter wood, but will also break more easily. Also, before breaking, Hickory will splinter while Maple will just snap.

+1 That pretty much sums it up for me.

Maple sticks are better to use when smoking a ham and turkey.

Hickory sticks are better for ribs and chicken.

    I'm not joking either.

I actually use old drum sticks in the grill/smoker.

Oh, I was more going for the difference in feel when you hold it and play.

    lol.....

I'm sure my reply wasn't one you expected!

Maple sticks tend to be lighter......and won't last as long (will break) if you are playing heavier type stuff. Good for lighter jazz, and situations that require a softer touch.

I typically use maples, even though Im playing rock as I feel like I have more controll, but everyone right, I dont even dimple drum heads after playing them for 6 months, but I break sticks cause that is just how it happens.

That's awesome! I'll have to try that at the next BBQ. I can just see my dad's face now as I load up the grill with old sticks!

Make sure you lightly sand any varnish/printing off....(only takes a second or two).

I usually cut the sticks into 3 pieces about three inches long. You might want to soak for a little bit as they can catch on fire and burn. I also put them in a cast iron pan meant for wood pieces/chips.

    Happy grilling.

I've been comparing ProMark 5A Hickory vs ProMark 330 Maple and the feel of the maple sticks are light and in my opinion, the tone is a bit dark. The hickory sticks are a tad heavier, brighter in tone but the tips splinter in a vertical direction and cause pre-mature wearing on my heads.

Hickory sticks in my opinion, absorb more impact and my hands feel less fatigued after playing for more than an hour.

On the otherhand, the maple sticks feel as if I'm playing "air" drums since they feel so much lighter.

I've broken both maple and hickory sticks while playing and found the hickory to splinter rather than completely break apart like the maple sticks which is a huge advantage for me.

I'm going back to hickory sticks on my next purchase.

I too prefer the hickory, its a harder wood and as far as the difference in how they feel holding them, I doubt you can tell the difference.

Take a ride to your local music store and compare a set of each to see for yourself.

I used Pro Mark Naturals. I have both Oak and Hickory I like the feel of the Oak a little more. but I play both. I really like the Naturals because it doesnt have a finish on them so when you sweat it goes into the stick instead of making the stick slippery. They do feel very different then other sticks and some of my friends just dont like them.

I absolutely love the Promark naturals in hickory although I recently switched sizes (a bunch of my unused 5A's can be found on ebay for $5). I picked up a pair of the 330 Maples, the Todd Sucherman signatures, just to try them and they feel cheap to me even though I know they're not. It's hard to describe but they feel like the cheap generic sticks my old high school music teacher made us use. Overall I prefer the feel of Oak if it is a well balanced stick, hickory second. That being said I don't like the price of Oak. I see people trying sticks at my local music store on a practice pad all the time before buying. Maybe you could do the same before making a decision and stocking up.
