i always use a reverse dot control sound coated snare batter. It sits perfectly in the middle of the spectrum for me and has enough durability.

    I voted CS.

The sound of Emperor X is just too dead. I recorded my first session with an Emperor X head, Everything just sat over the top of the snare drum, it had to be heavily processed to give it any presence in the mix. Second session, I had a Controlled Sound, which worked extremely well. I don't know if anyone else has had this experience.

Either way, I have never had any trouble with CS head's durability, and believe me, I hit hard. Maybe because I don't try to put the stick through the head? If you're only considering Emperor X for durability, I'd say skip it.

Just tune that CS up tight and you'll get a great tone for metal or rock. Tune it a bit lower for prog, unless it's prog metal!

The only two constants I have are DW and Zildjian.

Completely my bad. I wasn't using my kit at my last gig and the snare there was hi-velocity. I use hi-energy. You're completely right it is what Adler uses and that's why I bought it. Personally, the hi-velocity wasn't tight enough for me. It just didn't make the same pop 'n crack.

I love my hi-energy. It just makes my snare so in your face. I hate to claim someone else's sound but it really does sound a lot like Adler's snare just with a little more ping and less crack.

The winner is: (drum roll please lol)

    Remo Controlled sound

So when the snare head dies on my snare I will get this one to replace it.

Thank you all for your advice.
