I always wondered how you can lacquer a sparkle like that. It's really cool!

Yes, MCX, Renowns, Starclassics, and I would add the Ludwig Epic X-Over to that mix.

No. Other drums are not made to same specs, in both shell construction nor hardware.

Russ he didn't ask what drums are the same, he asked what drums are in the same league. I don't there are 2 kits by 2 different manufacturers that are the same anywhere. There are always small differences. By that I think we have to assume he meant what drums are comparable in price, quality, etc... to Saturns.

so what would you prefer over the saturns in the same price range?

That's a huge variable. Not only does each person like a different sound as the kit sounds before proper heads and tuning, there's the issue of what's available in your area. If what costs something in US currency changes to a whole other price point in your region, then you could have a whole different set of options to consider.

I can't think of anything. They are in a class all themselves with the walnut blend.

I would probably compare them to a TAMA bubinga starclassic series but would expect to pay more for the TAMA's.

Although the Ludwig Epic X-Over has a Walnut/Maple blend, with a Poplar core and 3 ply birch reinforcement rings. They too are in a class by themselves in terms of shell construction.

The regular Epics are maple/birch as well, so also a blend.

Yeah...especially considering they're like $3,500 more than Saturns.

For it's price range though. IMO the Saturn is pretty much unmatched. I don't own one but I have played them and I'm always blown away.

In some cases, I wouldn't consider two kits by the same company the same! Each drum when it comes to the high-end kits is normally made by hand and can be made very differently...
