Going without hearing protection is like drugs: Don't do it. (and no it doesn't make you feel high, or make you any cooler, it just makes your ears ring a lot and eventually leads to deaf.)

I always use them. In extreme circumstances , when I need every bit of hearing I can get, I'll use one earplug at a time, and swap between sets. In the last 2 years, I've done maybe 200 gigs, often with new bands and no rehearsal, I've done this twice.

Hearing damage is caused by a combination of volume and time exposure, and being exposed to a high volume for twice as long, will do WAY more than twice the damage.

A good thing to try if you think you don't need earplugs, is put one plug in at the start of the night, and leave it in all night. By the end of the night, both ears will sound the same to you. Then take the plug out, and hear the difference! Eventually, if you don't use protection, how your ears are before you take the plug out, is how they will both be, all the time.

We play some lively songs mixed in the set list at church and last Sunday we played 3 of 'em. After church my ears were ringing bad. Going to p/u some Hearos tomorrow.

When I played in a large church (1500 per service) I played V-Drums. Now in a church with 40-50 and a room that seats maybe 120, I am using acoustic drums. Only 2 services in the new temporary digs so far, but my volume is so controlled that hearing protection is not an issue.

This was week 1 with the shield. Week 2 without the shield is still on my camera. The camera was at the back wall of the room which shows you how small it really is. It is a good exercise in control to be sure.

Mods, given the huge importance of hearing protection, would it be worth having a sticky somewhere to try and raise the profile of this for new members?
You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common:
they don't alter their views to fit the facts, they alter the facts to fit their views,
which can be uncomfortable if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering.

According to all these answers, guess I've been doing it wrong all these years.
I have never used earplugs and I don't personally know any drummer that does.
Drumming since 1965 and still going!

Always use 'em.. I'd highly recommend getting some Hear Savers; custom fitted earplugs with different attenuators for different decibel levels. Pretty much just like turning the noise of the room down without muffling the sound.

I just use closed back headphones. They cut out the harmful noise, while letting me hear what needs to be. Although, in a room with great acoustics/soundproofing- really loud noises suddenly don't seem as bad. I still say that they help me hear things better, if anything.
