the great thing about drums tho..is tuning is tuning..its not specific...its just what you like to hear...tuning a guitar vs drums (although completed by the same process) is a totally different thing..I could tune my drums to sound a million different ways..so just go with what you like the sound to be
this instrument is all about that specific players preferences

I've got a djembe. Tuning that, ya typically take up your slack string to do some cross weaving. I found out, that this can be more easily accomplished with zip ties, in like one-tenth the time and effort.
I've read alot of articles about drum tuning and most articles say to just tune the bottom head tight and the top head loose. The snare on the other hand, I've read to just tune the bolts as tight as you can.
No, you have to tune top head like a notch or a couple notches down from the bottomOriginally Posted by Twiggy

what are concert toms?
Google Drum Tuning Bible. That will tell you everything you need to know. And probably a few things you DON'T, but that's a great starting point.
ya i know ive tried it before just to see what happens and the drums have no resonance at all they sound awful just AWFULTuning the bottom heads makes a huge difference in the sound of the drum. I know some guys that take the bottom heads off...what a mistake!!!

Is it bad for the heads to keep them really loose? I like the sound I can get out of the floor tom when the head is barely even screwed on.
Band: System of a Down
Song: Atwa
Current: four way independence
the guy I bought my set from took off the bottom head and lugs for the floor tom...and it sounds HORRIBLE! so now I have to go out and buy new lugs...but on the subject of tuning, I find the snare is the easiest to tune...I actually like tuning the snare...but I hate tuning toms...
The egg approves!
snare is the hardest hands down
especially if u have a crappy snare
watever drum is the crappiest is always the hardest to tune (go figure eh?)

I love tuning the kick, especially when you get just the right sound out of it.

just tune your drums to how you think they should sound that simple
yep yep my drums sound sweet
I had my drum teacher come tune mine when I got them. He's been playing and tuning for 32 years. He says that every drum has its "natural" key or pitch. Try to find that pitch and keep all of your lugs even and in tune with it self and that will get you started. With all of them years he says that he tunes every drum different. I watched him do my set and since then I had to tune the snare and a 10" tom. They sound in tune to me. I think I picked it up quite quick from him.
Well I've played guitar for almost 20 years so I have a good ear I guess too.
guitar wont exactly help you tune your set, i've playing for a while too. it just helps you to develop a faster ear for the pitch or note.Originally Posted by Torque
