ill get it started off what is sincopation?
ok while on this site i realise i dont know what some words mean like
sincopation
or break beat
so lets start a dictonary if you find a word you dont understand post it hear and with any luck one person on the site will.
example
what is a blast beat.
blast beat
often bassed on double kick patterns with the grove being mimiced on the ride and a snare beat that is played at consitent speed and volume with the grove.
jazz triplet.
a three stroke pattern often played with one hand in play with a cymbal. most commonly the snare and ride.
feathering
a series of gost notes played on anything, often used by max roach on the snare and bass to drop "bombs"
play till the day i die. it makes more sense that way.
"You should set up your drums around the toilet. You know you must use it everyday and lets be realistic, nothing better is going on when your sitting on there. Why not take care of business and play the drums." silver dragon sound

SYNCOPATION (sĭng'ko-pā'shun): A shift of accent in a passage or composition that occurs when a normally weak beat is stressed.
Such as in the following
4/4 xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx (16th notes)
Counted 1e&uh 2e&uh 3e&uh 4e&uh
The syncopated accents would be as follows:
1E&uh 2E&uh 3E&uh 4E&uh
The normal (or expected) accent would be on the downbeats i.e. 1, 2, 3, & 4
whereas the syncopated accent beat is the E or 16th note following the downbeat an otherwise weak beat.

Break beat... ooh, that's a tough one to define.
It's kind of like playing a basic beat, but then throwing in accents and starting the beat again from the accent... bad definition, I know. It's used a lot in drum n bass.
Here's a video that'll explain 1000's of times better than I ever could.

When you get into a lot of these terms, they're better understood after having spent some time playing with them, listening to the music, and playing in bands where you can incorporate these beats. The lines often get blurred.
Syncopation is a musical term not exclusive to drums alone. It is to play on the "upbeats" rather than on the strong or "downbeat"
example....one AND two AND three AND four AND....so on
as you sub divide it further into 16th etc... the syncopation can also...
hope that helps
all the best...
Thanks guys, I learned something that I didn't know. Being a self taught drummer I don't know a lot about music and common musical terms. I play syncopated accents all of the time, but if I ever had to discuss it with another musician in those terms I wouldn't have known what to call it to discuss it in the right terms. This thread could be really helpful to a lot of us I think!
My understanding of back beat is that the snare beat on the 2 and the 4 are the back beat.

Yep same here PB, and "off beat" is the snare or hi-hat on other notes which is also the same as syncopation?

wikipedia it for a clear definition of what syncopation means. they usually have clear definitions, also there are tons of books and lessons on this subject, we all dot it but some times its nice to fully understand what we just did.
