Default Harmonics without the ringing fundamental

    Hi there,

I have a kit of Gretsch Renown Maples with Evans coated G2s over Resos. I really like the open sound, and would prefer to not use any muffling. The problem is I have too much ringing fundamental.

When I try to muffle (Moon Gels/O-rings), it kills the lovely harmonics, but not much happens to the fundamental. And I can't seem to tune it out. I like the toms tuned low, right now with the resos tight. The 12" is OK, but the 16" ft and 18" ft are pretty bad.

    Any suggestions?

i think i know what you are looking for. hmmm
it could be part to d with the fact that the drums are maple and therefor create a longer sustaining fundamental.
Birch drums typically have a shorter sustaining fundamental.
You might want to try some different heads. Remo control sound heads help shorten sustain. If you want to stick with evens, i think the power center heads would be comparable.
I used to put a remo control sound head on the resonant side of my floor toms to help shorten the sustain and it worked. maybe try a dot-style head top and bottom?
