    Default Snare tuning

Just a quick question in regards to snare tuning. I watched a video of Gavin Harrison, and loved his snare sound. After research, i found his snare is a 14x5. Travis Barker uses a 14x7, on the other hand, and i love his snare sound as well. My question is how is it that Travis's snare can be tuned to sound extremely similar to Gavin's, when its got 2 inches on Gavin's?

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)

you cant hear a drum on a recording and expect to reproduce that sound from your drums ..... drums on recordings and live on a stage are miced and run through sound processing equipment , you will never get that sound without all the equipment , sorry.

i wasnt asking how to get the sound, i was asking how the different dimensions of the drum can produce the same or close to the same sound, sorry if i was unclear.

I get what your asking and I think it is in the tuning and heads. Anything after 6.5 in depth would be a deeper warmer sound to me. I have a 6.5 and the sound is warmer than my 5 and 5.5 snares.

Hmmm....there is a difference in how they hit their snare drum. Gavin is a more precise player and hits the snare at a moderate velocity. Travis, on the other hand, plays with more conviction and hits the snare at a very high velocity. Perhaps, the increased depth of Travis' snare makes up for his hard playing. I would bet that if you hit both snares with the same velocity, you will hear a lot of the differences.

I'm with NR and Tom. They could be triggered, and if not, it's all about processing and effects. I would guarantee that if you played them both in person, no matter how they were tuned, you'd be hard pressed to get them to sound the same.
