this is question for some of the home studio guys

just wondering the Sennheiser E604 looks like a sweet toms mic but should i just get the Shure SM57 for its diversity?

After consulting some of my audio engineering friends, they suggested the SM57 not for its diversity but because many hit records have used the SM57 as tom and drum mics. Both the Sennheisser and the 57 are priced the same but as far as an industry standard, the SM57 is highly recommended.

Just a note, the old SM57 were known for their exploding plastic wind screens when hit by a errand drum stick stroke so Shure re-designed the windscreen to rotate freely 360 degrees around to help disapate any force that may come in contact with the windscreen. Please note it is NOT a defect in the mic if you decide to buy the SM57.

I'll second that. Shure SM57 are fantastic mics. Best mic in that price range period. I have 5. Bought them in 1978 and they are still rocking!

Those are a high quality mic from a very reputable company. They look very easy to mount, mine use a similar rim clip and do not get in the way of playing at all. If you are looking for a low profile mic that is good for the money, i'd go with those. If you can hang with a bigger mic the sm57 or audix d2 might be more your style. Depends on budget though.

itchie, just remember the tom mic is just for reinforcement of sound to blend in with the over heads. The attack and a lot of the tone will come from the over heads, then the bottom end and reinforcement of sound will come from direct mic'ing. Now I would get the one that is most robust because we as drummers end up hitting those mics a lot. Either will work just fine. One thing to remember to do is to strip silence the tom tracks so you don't have them humming along with the other drums and instruments while you are recording.

I'm using SM 57s for my small toms, but I wasn't that impressed with the sound on my floor tom. I replaced that one with a CAD bass drum mic and got a much bigger sound out of it. 57s are beauty on snares too.

What other uses might you find for the SM57?

If you don't need a diverse mic, the e604's are great for toms, and they will stand up to accidental stick hits.

SM57's can be used to mic any instrument. Guitar and bass amps. Pretty versatile.

I don't know enough about those to comment. I was trying to figure out your budget, to help narrow down your choices though. If you're buying a stereo or omnidirectional mic, why would you need two of them?

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)

samson CL2s??? Either them or the CO2s would be good overheads.

or if you really want to go all out AKG C414s or Samson VR88 but you have to get 2 of them

the VR88s give a warmer sound to the kit and is useful if there is excessive shimmering or high frequencies in the cymbals
