    Default Need some wood grain...

So im getting tired of the cheap look of solid color wrap. And im wondering if the wood under the wrap is nice enough to refinish it. My question is, if the wood from the inside of the drum(wood you can see through batter/reso head) is going to look similar or the same as the wood under the wrap, because if it is then im most likely going to go for it.From my understanding i either have a poplar or mahogany kit. Not quite sure what wood it really is due to when i bought my set i had no clue as to what i was buying lol. I dont really want to start pulling things apart and find out the wood looks cheap and or is really crappy and blemished. So if i can get some sort of tips or feedback that would be greatly appreciated...

    red wine wraps

tested the stain on a random 2x4(going for a darker tone so i need another coat) Still needs the clear coat

Most important is your ability to remove the wraps without damaging the wood under them( they will be glued most likely). I had a set of percussion plus drums with red wraps and I stained them. They looked great. Also a couple coats of poly would make that piece of wood you stained look amazing.

There are a bunch of restoration project threads here. Do a search and see how they all turned out. If you have the patience, I say do it, the rewards are well worth it. Love the natural wood finish on drum sets. They look like fine furniture.

This is a '80s Ludwig 14" Rocker tom I restored. The shell had a nice natural blonde color but I stained it with red mahagony. Here's a few pics:

Stained but no clear coat applied at this stage:

I went cheap and used clear coat from a spray can but I thought I got good results:

Fumbled time, same to you. I'm guessing that sparying is your day job? If it isn't, it could be.

Forgot about the dragon LT8T, Bang up job bro!

No spray for me guys it was all foam brushed on, The stain and the poly. Took 4 days to complete and I let it dry for three more.

There is a great before and after thread in the Hand drum/ percussion forum on here.

If you find that the wood is not pretty enough to stain, you might opt for wraping in a veneer (super thin sheet of real wood). You can get any wood you can imagine, and its very easy to do. Heres some pictures of the 60s Slingerland set I wrapped in Walnut Burl.

Another nice job of refinishing. What did they do wrong though to have to stand in the corner?

Riverr1- Thanks for the compliment! Here's how i pulled it off:

    Step#1
Found a tatoo graphic (bolder outline than regular graphic) of a dragon:

    Step#2
Took the dragon graphic and ran it through my printer with carbon paper:

    Step#3
Traced the dragon image that was printed on the carbon paper onto the drum shell with sharp ball point pen
and started the outlining the dragon with a $12.00 wood burning tool:

    Step#4
Lightly etched the dragon graphic on the drum shell to establish an outline:

    Step#5
When the outlining of the dragon graphic was done, I started burning deeper lines into the drum shell:

    Step#6
I rigged a makeshift spray booth in my garage and used my floor jack as a spray platform

    Late8,

That's some impressive work. Since seeing Carl Palmer's stainless steel kit years ago, I've always thought that etching or engraving a kit was a cool idea. I'm thinking I might be able to do it myself and it would be fun to try. Thanks. Remember this:
