I am not sure to what it is your asking but I will give it a shot. When you remove lugs and clean them. Make sure you put a drop of 3in1 oil on the rods before threading them back in and this will lubricate the inside of the lugs and tension springs.

Make sure you have a nice, soft towel, or a few of them under the drum you are working on. Depending on the finish your drums have, they can be scratched and dinged easily.

If the lugs have a hex type screw head, I always opt to use a nut driver, rather than a screw driver. You can use a small socket wrench if you don't have a nut driver. But always work with the socket handle inside the drum. The other way, you have a very good chance of smacking the bearing edge with the socket handle... not good.

Get some small containers to put the parts in as they come off. Things have a weird way of disappearing, like socks in a dryer.

When I remove a lug, I'll put a small drop of lug lube, or 3 in 1 on a tension rod and thread it into a lug, and let it sit that way while I working on cleaning everything else up.

I don't use anything to clean my gear other than a mirofibre cloth, and warm water. Just damp. And I dont use any water inside on the raw wood.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

Instead of 3in1 oil, you should use petroleum jelly instead. Not as runny and less invasive to your chrome parts.

True, 3 in 1 can damage if used in excess but one drop on the lug thread is pretty safe. Never tried the jelly though.

I use petroleum jelly also and find it to work quite well. A little goes a long way.....just dip about 1/8th to 1/4in of the lug into the jelly before threading it in.

I was told to use petroleum jelly on my hunting bow. There is no smell to tip off the deer like with oils and the jelly lasts longer.

Yep, just am careful when I pass the rod through the hoop. After a head change, the jar of jelly looks like a gopher field with all of the holes. Next time I use it though, it is smooth as it was when it was new. 1 jar has lasted me a couple of years so far...

When I worked at a local music store, they turned me on to using valve grease for trumpets and trombones and stuff on all the lugs. works great.

Yeah, petroleum jelly for lugs and bolts definitely stops the rust. And not only on the tension bolts, but the screw threads on all fittings where you have wing nuts and bolts, such as clamps, cymbal tilters, tom holders, etc. Plus the lower ends of stand sections, stops the rust getting in over time. For years I've kept a small plastic pot of just the cheap generic petroleum jelly in the work shed, separate from the the "name brand" Vaseline jar in the household. That way, no need to worry about dirt and "gopher holes" in the normal jar.

I've been using Vaseline for 50 years, works fine. Don't forget to clean the threads in the lug. I use a very small wire brush like thing (forgot what they call them) it looks like a mascara thing. Put some Vaseline on it and turn it into the lug threads. A lot of crap can build up in there if you don't clean them each time you change heads.

I pull my set completely apart every 5 years or so. I mean totally apart, and clean everything.
