Default Tips for transitioning to quads/[quints]?

So, this year, I was in the pit. (I would've been on bass 3, but missed tryouts.)

Originally, I had planned to try out for snare for next year. I have a marching snare, and one of my best friends was snare captain this year. That does help, of course. I still think I'm going to try out for snare. However, I'm pretty good at drumset, and the other day, I asked my snare captain friend to teach me some basic stuff on quads, since I figured I may as well learn it. We learned that even though I've been practicing snare a lot since last August, I'm actually pretty much better at quads (well, we have quints at my school) than snare. I think it's because of traditional vs matched grip. I broke my left wrist as a young child, and I think that slightly limits my movements some. Also, I think playing drumset probably helped as well.

Anyways, I've already learned the positions of the drums and how to read music for it. I also learned about the zones, except for the spock... where is the zone for it? And about crossing over, but I'm not sure exactly what drums cross over where (as in, forearm, wrist, or stick.) Could someone please explain? Also, what else should I know about quints? I'm almost sure I'll try out for them for next year, with my drumset background, if I can learn things quickly enough. I can already play a few of the tryout pieces correctly, and parts of a few others as well. (I almost have one show piece from this year really good.) What do you think they'll look for in tryouts? Thanks so much!

well i don't know what they would look for in tryouts but for judges like when your out playing they look for matched sticking same stick height(as in your stick and is as far away from the drum as the next quint player next to you and he hits right stick you hit right stick) now back to tryouts if you do field shows maybe coordination with your feet and sticking i dont know(my school was too small for those), accents played right flam's, rhythms played correctly, rests, basically the more perfect(grammar) you play it the better.
Did you hear about the drummer that locked his keys in his car? It took 4 hours to get the bass player out.

Im a freshman this year and play quints. Really surprised me because it is one of the hardest things to play. With my drumset background, transitioning was not hard. just remember to use wrist and not arm. (I was playing like a monkey the first week) Also, there isnt a playing zone on the spock. just hit it roughly in the middle. Where you cross over depends on the song. usually at the wrist. other things to keep in mind are chops...you need alot of them. There's no magic rule to playing quints...just practice!

Hope you do well at your tryouts, and welcome to drumchat!

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)
