I crash my current ride cuz its a crash/ride. Often wonder why people crash their dedicated ride cymbals, however.
Quick question, why are more and more drummers crashing rides? Ive started repairing cymbals and I'm finiding heaps of rides with radial cracks and huge outer edge cracks. Sellers say " I like to crash my rides" . Thats fine but they seem suprised they crack! Theyre designed to be ridden not crashed, theyre too heavy, too thick and some sound terrible when crashed. Buy a big crash cymbal! I have two A series 21" Sweet rides in my room here, both have had repairs to radial cracks. Still great as a ride, life is over as a crash! Stop crashing them!

I go to my local drum shop and purchase my sticks. I like to touch them before I buy them ;-)

i only play rides. 20" thin rides are crashes to me and 21" are rides. five total are currently set up and I have never cracked a cymbal. just FWIW
Yeah, that's weird. Crashing a crash/ride is okay I guess if you want your kit to remain small. Never really bought into that crash/ride idea, though.

A lot of rides were designed to be crashed.. the basic 20" Zildjian K Ride is a perfect example...so are most Meinl Byzance rides... a lot of Bosphorus and Istanbul Agop Rides are great crashes. The Paiste Giant Beat series are meant to be crashed and so is my Paiste 2oo2 Big Ride.

I lightly crash my 21" Paiste Prototype ride. It's big, heavy and has a ton of wash and resonance. I don't do it alot, just once in a while. I only crash it after riding it just for extra volume and set off that resonance. Seems like it goes for ever. It's great fill. I don't have to hammer it, it does'nt take much of a hit so set it off. You can actually increase the volume the longer you ride this cymbal so lightly crashing it is a good transition. Best I can explain it. I can say, I try to stay off the edge when crashing it. You can actualy physicaly see the ride resonate.
I also have a Paiste 3000 Rude Crash/ride. It's 18". I've seen a few of these crack and break also. Being it's a vintage cymbal and I use it mainly for it's stick definition, I have only crashed it a few times, but plan on stopping. I'd hate to break this thing. Such a unique sound and it's perfect shape.

I understand why some might crash their rides....it's just another sound, but I never got into it personally. I never liked the sound I got, but those are my ears. If crashing a ride though, one mustn't forget cymbal technique.

I have a 20" medium ride which gives me a decent..not too deep ride. On occasion, I do crash it, but only when I'm coming from a crescendo. I agree that they were not designed to be hit like a crash....and should not be hit like one. Furthermore, hi-hats are not designed to be hit like crashes either...yet, I've seen drummers do that.... C'mon, Man !

I only ride on my ride. No crashing for me. My AAX RBDR is too heavy, and sounds bad when crashed.

It depends on your style. A lot of jazz drummers over the years don't even have a crash in their setup because they crash their rides... and they sound great!
Recently, I've started crashing rides a lot more. But these are thin Bosphorus and Paiste Giant Beats. The key (I think) is to understand which rides and styles will work. I have other rides that can only be crashed as an occasional accent, and one or two I would avoid crashing entirely.

I don't crash my ride because it's a super thick 21" AA Rock Ride, and sounds like absolute garbage if I try to crash it. I do ride my 18" AAXplosion sometimes though.

I crash my ride during one of my band's choruses, it's basically just an extra heavy, deep, gongy sorta crash that's really loud and pisses my parents off. I find myself crashing it more often than my 16" because I like a deeper sound. And either way its less awkward feeling to crash my ride while sitting normally, rather than having to readjust my entire body to hit my 16" once, then readjust it again to go back to my main. By readjust I mean turn my body and not just my arm. Its more of a comfort thing above all else, at least for me, anyways.
So itchie, how did the kick sound?

I crash my rides. Never broken one. Plus, have you ever crashed a 24" Light Ride? That alone is justification. It sounds like God. And God sounds pretty darned good.

I don't even use my crash cymbal. It's just up for looks. But I don't really play all that hard either. Plus, I love the sound of my ride when crashed. Just a big slice of bronze tone with no overtones. Lush.

Thank you, I agree.... Everyone should be able to crash their rides. If people are cracking them they need to learn proper technique and stop being neanderthal like IMO. .....that is unless money is no object and you can afford a couple few hundred dollars everytime you play.

I crash my ride. I like the sound it makes so i've used it in breakdown sections in some of our more 'emotional' songs. I'm not really worried about it cracking, I play with Pro Mark 7As and I don't hit it that hard when i'm crashing it (I think i'm hitting the shoulder of the cymbal at the edge rather than the edge itself as well, but it's difficult to tell). And if I ever do crack it, it's about £50 to replace I would think. Or maybe it would be an excuse to get a better cymbal.

I don't crash my rides. They don't sound good. And I have crash cymbals.
I think cymbals are best designed for one job. I wouldn't want a ride so wimpy that it could pass as a crash cymbal. I like my crashes to be bright with a quick decay (Zildjian A Custom Fast Crashes). My main ride is a 21" Zildjian Z Mega Bell, it's very heavy and if I crash it, it sounds like a gong and sustains forever.......yuk!

I don't think rides were meant to be used for anything other than riding. Some companies try to make crash/rides, but they end up with a subpar cymbal not fit for either usage. If it's a ride, use it for riding; if it's a crash, use it for crashing.

Why not is the real question. If the technique your using gets you the sound you want out of your cymbal, then do it (as long as its not thrashing abuse).
Having multi purpose cymbals is a plus for many people for many reasons. Also in a rock setting crash riding can be a good way to create a bed of noise (our version of a distortion pedal.) I think as long as the ride isn't too thick crash that thing all you want.
