Krupa was getting on a bit at the time. Gene was almost as good as Buddy when he was in his prime.

Some truth to that, Vinny. I noticed the same age difference, so it certainly could have been a factor.

Buddy did begin practicing at the age of one...of course he would be a prodigy if he had that drilled into him from such a young age, I think anyone would be :p It would just be natural.

Cool Have you ever seen this before?

You need to put this drum battle in perspective. Gene Krupa was toward the end of his career in 1966, and, quite frankly, Krupa had some serious drug issues that followed him through his career and they had taken their toll in the later years. I believe Krupa died in the mid-70s...

Even though Buddy Rich was well-known in jazz drumming circles back then, he was becoming more visible to the general public as well (he was the drummer/bandleader on a Jackie Gleason summer replacement show called--appropriately--"Away We Go!"). And while it takes nothing away from either drummer's talent, Buddy was faster and sharper than Krupa at this stage of his career...
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!
