the clap trap.
I have been using this "technique for years but I don't know what it is called. What is the name for: When the hi-hat is open and you hit it, and then close it while it is still resonateing. This gives you the sheeeehoooo sound that accents things so nice. Just curious if there is a name for this.
the clap trap.

I never knew how you called either but now I know the Clap Trap makes sense.

... Well it's sort of different from a choke. A choke mutes the sound of the cymbal. Closing a hi-hat creates a *chick* sound when the initial hit is stopped. I guess it is similar to a choke, but it is followed by something else and so it is more of a combination of a choke and the other thing, or it is a single technique that involves two techniques. I hope my opinion is not ambiguous, I am not really sure about it myself...

I've heard it called the "hi-hat bark". I read somewhere Chad Smith calls it the "pea-soup" sound because it's like...well, peeeeaasshuuupp!! sounding (maybe he got that description from all the 70's funk drummers he likes). But Butter is right, a "choke" sound is more of a muted cymbal sound, rather like hitting a crash and stopping the sound with your hand.

i call it a "TEEEST" and use it a lot in fills but then i call my snare drum "Malorie" so just ignore me!
If you are going through hell...keep going!
Bought Border lands for $60 and couldnt play it.The Best buy kid sold me $200 worth of power supply and vid card and I still cant play it.I gave up.Never have played it.Wish I would have gotten that kids name.
I was joking about the Clap Trap name, but it was the first thing that came to mind.I think it doesnt have an "official" name.Seems to me someone would have named it already.I guess its what ever we call it.

This has me wondering more than ever now! I think I will ask my son's music teacher. There must be a name for it...anyone teaching drummers to read music should have a name for it I would think. Aren't there any music teachers out there?????
Yep, and you've already heard from a few of them. I take lessons, and I've never heard a name for the technique either. I have only heard the action described.

Yep, read my earlier post. "Hi-hat bark", also what the old 70's drummers use to refer to as the "pea-soup" sound.

or something...
I don't know what it is called, however, I don't want anything to do with anything called clap trap
the book im reading just references the shoop sound, no particular name.
