    Default Drum Hoop Replacement

Hey guys! I haven't been drumming for long, but long enough where I'm getting to that point where I need to replace things that have wear from my early learning days.

One of the things that could probably be replaced soon is my bass drum hoop. When I first started drumming, I must have tightened my bass pedal to much or something, and the hoop has a little crack/warp going on on the bottom.

I got my kit from a friend, not directly from Gretsch. I went to their website, but didn't see anything for replacement parts. However, I haven't called customer support yet. I also searched online, but couldn't find any sites selling replacement parts like this.

What's the easiest way to replace this drum hoop? No hurry, but I am curious for when I am ready to replace it.

Just call your nearest music store that has a Gretsch account. They will contact their Regional Sales Rep and order the hoops. Note that they may not make the correct finish anymore. You may have to settle for another finish....if you do, make sure you get a set (ie., batter as well as resonant side) to match.

Right on. In my town, their is really only one small private shop. About a half an hour away, their is a Guitar Center. They probably have a Gretsch account, eh?

Also I think you are right, my finish is discontinued. Any dark color, preferably black, will work just fine. What does 1 hoop/ 1 set of hoops usually cost roughly? 100 bucks?

I bought my Catalinas from a GC (out of state). The Reso hoop got damaged in the mail and they quickly ordered a set for me. Yeah, $100 sounds about right. But, ya know, if the crack on your hoop is not that bad, you can probably get one of those metal hoop protectors....I think they're like $5.

The crack isn't that bad, but bad enough where it looks like it could potentially start spreading. Kind of like a cymbal crack because its going horizontal with the hoop...

It's not vintage, but I do believe Gretsch discountinued my set.

Hoops are really easy to get aftermarket. There's a couple of places that can help you out high up in the Yahoo search results.

Yeah I kind figured something like this doesn't necesarily have to match the brand of the drum set.....should it at least be the same type of wood? something like this seems pretty universal.

Would I probably be fine going with this?:

That should do just fine. Now that you have a high enough post count that the system will allow it, I could PM you what my quick search turned up as well.

As a friendly reminder, commercial links in the discussion threads are frowned upon by the moderation. But saying "I found Gibraltar hoops for $50" and attaching a picture is ok.

Oops! My bad. We'll consider that my initiation.

Just one last question...I know its 22 inches around, but does the width of the hoop affect the sound? The regular one I have now is probably 3-4 inches (without having it in front of me with a tape measure).

The only time I've seen wider hoops was on the Travis Barker OCDP kit. I would imagine it supposedly projects the sound out a little bit, but I personally am skeptical. I'm all for keeping is as shallow as possible anyway- easier to stuff in the car.
