This took some time, but I have been wanting to record this process for a while now and this discussion spurred me on. Sweet.
Hopefully this will explain why this guy's very impressive solo feels like its in different time signatures. Maybe some day I will have a good enough handle on this to improv around it, but as it stands I'm not quite there.

Nice! Looks like this guy is mixing more patterns with the kick so actually is pretty cool and could be used as a great independence exercise, I'd try some mods removing the claves and using more melodic (Bozzio style) ostinatos
