    Some of the harder ones for me to learn were

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3an8jdsVM3s"]YouTube - Meshuggah - Bleed[/ame]

    Intro groove (still trying to learn)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwUTXPsUkxY"]YouTube - The cat empire - Sunny Moon[/ame]

    This one is harder than it sounds to play cleanly

    Spot on, NR! And when you gotta teach the importance of playing groove, it goes in and out the ears of a few of my young charges. Lol, oh don't worry, they get a good dose of Phil Rudd, Ringo and Charlie as well as all important (and not so well-known) drummers within their lessons, not just the flashier players.

    I had more luck with this when I stopped counting altogether. Notice I did not say success, but luck. The guys in that band allegedly didn't count at all, they just felt those odd signatures. I have my doubts about this (I got this from the January 2000 issue of Modern Drummer), but I have made some small progress over the years.

    This has me pulling my hair out recently. I can diassemble the groove and do each piece independently, it just isn't coming together for whatever reason. Can't cheat practice.

    This is my other one I've had to walk away from. In all fairness I believe it's both Jimmy and his brother Paul playing a drum duet, so that may be what's throwing me off.

    Working on FITR, I have the basic groove down, no problem. I love it. Sounds soo good once I incorporated the hi-hat. the problem is tempo. I think I'm playing it about 10bpm slower than the song, and that little difference is killing me. when I try to play at song tempo, my right foot locks up on the double. so instead of boom-boom boom boom... I'm getting boom... boom... boom.. (Lol sorry lack of better way to describe.). I guess I just need to keep practicing.
    I guess it depends on the song. I admit I have a pretty good ear and a knack for remembering drum parts. Also, I have played literally hundreds and hundreds of songs over the course of my playing days. Over time its easy to get the skeleton of the song first and then add in the bits over time. That's the bonus of being a drummer. We can fake our way through until we know the song well (except for difficult parts in odd time or something like that). Not sure if I answered your question...

    For those of you who may never have heard of the song I mentioned (Shadow Gallery: Mystery)

    The first 30 seconds has the following time signatures:

    3/4 (x6) 6/8, 5/8, 6/8. 5/8, 7/8, 4/4... (I forget)

    I've found in teaching..... that the most difficult beat for students is the BOSSA NOVA. They can play it close....or get 2/3's of it down. But rarely can they nail the kick part perfectly while playing the top. Forget about adding left foot hats on the quarters. Even though I have a few students that can do it.

    The hardest groove I ever tried to learn was something I saw Pat Torpey do in a behind the scenes video oh him in the studio. I spent 6 hours with a tape deck rewinding the chop....I finally got it. But I drove my wife nuts that day.

    I love playing around with bossa nova....and to play it quietly is harder than loud.

    Hard to picture someone having a hard time with that one, but I totally know what you mean.

    DD you're exposing me to new music here, but I kinda like it! That first one is pretty gnarly!

    Hey Redneck, check out this kid, what really impresses me is at the age of 7, he's clearly working the sheet music more than anything! That's a skill he'll use for life:

    The drum section in eulogy by tool. Hi hat opening every third 16th note while playing that relatively straight forward rock beat. I still can't get it right.

    On the Purdie shuffle: Once I figured out how the hand part to the purdie shuffle went it all fell into place relatively quickly. I had been trying to start the shuffle with the double, which led to my problems, once I figured out the dirst 3 notes were cymbal snare cymbal it was cake.

    Nechre, I didn't know that song before you brought it up (Eulogy) but I'm glad I went and listened to it, I do like the use of the hi hat.
