    Wow!

I can't believe nobody has thrown in Les Claypool or Flea. They are 2 of the best in the modern rock era.

most good bass palyers i know converted from guitar because they were too good at guitar. So i gues splaying scales at speed isnt really that great. But then what would make a good bass player? I like flea, He is intricate syncopated and pretty trickey. I honestly dont really know how to pick someone out though :S

My experience has been just the opposite. Most of the bass players I know are failed guitarists. That's what sets guys like Geddy Lee apart from the crowd: his technique, his speed. Most base lines in Rock, Pop, Country, R&B are very easy to play.

How is Flea overrated? He is a good bassist...if you disagree with him as a bassist currently, you should understand that the band seems to have become a lot less technical since Californication (hardly ever hear a pocket groove from Chad anymore :( )

I have to say that growing up I liked John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, but I would have to say that I think Geddy Lee is hard to top now.
