The maximum for a usb 2.0 cable is 5 meters / almost 16'.5" for a single cable. You could use up to 5 cables, and 5 2.0 hubs that would give you the maximum distance of 30 meters, but you would be dealing with some awful signal delay.
since my computer is smarter than my old ladies laptop, would there be any defecit from running a really long usb cable from my interface,( in the basement) to my computer upstairs? in the long run i will be putting together a computer just for drums, but that is a while away, or possibly just a mixer and digital recorder. i dunnno

USB 2 extender over cat 5 - not cheep
just record on the laptop then transfer to the workstation
You could run long audio cables instead, but that would require another person to operate the remote computer.
It's not a totally crazy idea. I have a 15 foot USB extension cable that comes in handy for things like this every now and then. I got mine at PC Warehouse. I'm not sure where you live, but see if there are any around you. It's sort of an odds-and-ends computer place.

sorry some how missed this post ..
you will most likely have recording issues if the operating system is running badly
this is a general rule the worst it runs the more clipping and digital pops you will get, so you want to have it running smooth ....hardware and software running in harmony .....
