Welcome to D.C. If you unscrew your rod from the stand you should be able to look inside at the moving parts. Just a starting point.
Hey guys,
I've got a no name brand hi hat stand that gets the job done but after everytime is use it a little pile of metal shavings appears at the bottom of the stand. For the life of me I can not figure out where from the hi hat stand it is coming from. The shavings are an orange/copper colour if that helps.
Any ideas where it is coming from?
Thanks

I am thinking your no name hi hat clutch has a steel shaft body which is wearing your top hat cymbal.
This is how you spell K-E-Y-H-O-L-E !!!!!
PS..... Those orange copper colored shavings are your cymbal.
Aliens. Its the only possible explanation.

Good idea but not the case. The drop clutch i actually bought yesterday but the shavings have been around for a while. It does not seem like the old one was key holeing the cymbal either. i just noticed the shavings are orange on 1 side but looks like untreated metal on the other... Aliens must be the only explanation!

Your cymbal hole is getting shaved by the steel threaded rod that is going through it. Maybe your top and or bottom hats are to loose and it is flopping around to much and grinding against the rod. I have always thought that this is a failing in the overall design of hat stands. We put sleeves on all of our other stands to protect the cymbals, right? Why should this be any different? It would take quite a while in order to notice keyholeing going on. There is nothing else that color associated with the manufacturing of your hi hat stand, its your top or bottom cymbal.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions!
i found out the it was the hi hat rod scraping in the centre against the lining of the cymbal stand. for some reason the inside of the stand has some weird copper like coating on it. well theres seems like nothing else i can do to stop it but at least its not damaging my cymbals!

Welcome ausdrummer. You might give it a shot of oil. That might prolong its death.

After reading the suggestions I was about to say that the rod inside the tubing is rubbing the walls and that the shavings are from that area not the cymbals. I guess ausdrummer figure it out by himself. Sometimes you have to study the problem carefully to find it. Good for you.
